holidays, the [1]British Navy has put the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible
up for sale on an eBay-like website. The proud 690-foot warship sailed
Her Majesty's seas from 1980 to 2005, and took part in the Falklands,
Balkans and Iraq campaigns. The ship underwent a major refit in 2004 but
was decommissioned in 2005 with the proviso that she could be
'reactivated' at 18 months notice if a crisis beckoned but [2]over the
years her engines, pumps and gear boxes were cannibalized for use in
other ships. If interested go to the auction site and [3]put her to your
'wish list,' or add her to your 'cart.' Interestingly enough, the
Australian government had originally planned to purchase the ship in 1982
but the Falklands war intervened and in July 1982 the [4]British Ministry
of Defence announced that it had withdrawn its offer to sell Invincible
and that it would maintain a three-carrier force."

joabj writes "In what may be its first investment in an open source
software company, Microsoft has quietly [0]invested in TurboHercules,
which maintains the Hercules open source IBM mainframe emulator. Perhaps
the potential for purloining customers from the juicy mainframe market
outstrips any misgivings Microsoft may have about open source. You might
remember TurboHercules: In March, it filed an antitrust complaint with
the EU over IBM's tying of its mainframe OSes with its hardware." A story
from earlier this year gives more information on the related [1]conflict
between Hercules and IBM over patents.

Something tells me those rules might be in line with professor Tom

do our best to prevent Autocomplete from displaying the terms most

eldavojohn writes "Amnon Marinov, a physicist specializing in super heavy
elements, claims that a stable isotope of [0]roentgenium is [1]commonly
found alongside gold, just in very small quantities that we could not
measure before. To prove this, he boiled gold in a vacuum, postulating
that as the gold evaporated, the roentgenium should remain. He did this
for two weeks and then passed the resulting mess through a mass
spectrometer and was left with several peaks that could be explained away
except for one. Marinov lead the team that found the [2]first super heavy
122 thorium isotope in nature a few years back and now claims that,
despite all indications that this super heavy element shouldn't exist
longer than a few seconds, he has found a stable isomer of roentgenium in
nature. Is he on to something, or overlooking a simpler explanation in
his quest for [3]evidence of the island of stability long theorized by
physicists?"

Translation Error writes "Two and a half years ago, the Borings [0]sued
Google for invading their privacy by driving onto their private driveway
and taking pictures of their house to display on Google Street View. Now,
the case has finally come to a close with the judge [1]ruling in favor of
the Borings and awarding them the princely sum of $1. While the judge
found the Borings to be in the right, she awarded them only nominal
damages, as the fact that they had already made images of their home
available on a real estate site and didn't bother to seal the lawsuit to
minimize publicity indicated the Borings neither valued their privacy nor
had it affected in any great way by Google's actions."
