An anonymous reader writes "Apple's iPad competitors are still
spec-obsessed, and Apple's next-gen iPad coupled with the same price
point is forcing Samsung to [0]rethink its tablet strategy and pricing
methodology altogether. The South Korean Yonhap News Agency relays a
quote from Lee Don-joo, executive VP of Samsung's mobile division, about
Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 compared to the new iPad. 'We will
have to [1]improve the parts that are inadequate,' Don-joo said. 'Apple
made it very thin.' Features aside, Samsung also finds itself in a bind
price-wise. The upcoming Galaxy Tab model, complete with a 10.1-inch
screen and Android 3.0, was initially going to be priced higher than the
current 7-inch Galaxy Tab. Apple's iPad 2, however, is forcing Samsung to
'think that over.'"

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader points out a study by the National Sleep Foundation
which looked at the relationship between sleep habits and [0]the use of
electronic communications tech in the hour before bedtime. Dr. Michael
Grasidar of Flinders University said, "My research compares how
technologies that are passively received' such as TVs and music versus
those with interactive' properties like video games, cell phones and the
Internet may affect the brain differently. The hypothesis is that the
latter devices are more alerting and disrupt the sleep-onset process."
The study found that people who frequently send text messages or use
their laptops before bed were [1]less likely to report getting a good
night's sleep (PDF) than people who don't. "While these technologies are
commonplace, it is clear that we have a lot more to learn about the
appropriate use and design of this technology to complement good sleep
habits," said the NSF's David Cloud.

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Eurogamer: "Microsoft
is [0]ramping up development of its next generation Xbox console
according to job positions being advertised on business networking site
LinkedIn, brought to light on the Beyond 3D Forum. The first position
advertised is for a Graphics Hardware Architect, working with the team
that is 'responsible for defining and delivering next-generation console
architectures from conception through implementation.' 'The
responsibilities include architecture analysis, key technology selection,
architecture specification, communication and collaboration with extended
Microsoft teams and partner companies,' according to the advert. ... the
most intriguing element of the story is just how early on in production
we appear to be far earlier than many had suspected. Unless Microsoft
is actually planning pre-production of the next next-gen console, the
evidence seems to suggest that the system is so early in development that
the graphics hardware at the very least hasn't been locked down."

[0]coondoggie writes "The community and team of scientists that help NASA

Jupiter and Saturn have been extensively studied by the Galileo and
Cassini missions, respectively. But Uranus and Neptune represent a wholly
distinct class of planet. While Jupiter and Saturn are made mostly of
hydrogen, Uranus and Neptune have much smaller hydrogen envelopes. The
bulk composition of these planets is dominated instead by heavier
elements; oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur are the likely candidates.
What little we know about the internal structure and composition of these
"ice giant" planets comes from the brief flybys of Voyager 2. So the ice
giants are one of the great remaining unknowns in the solar system: the
only class of planet that has never been explored in detail.'"

planet-finding mission announced the discovery of the most Earth-like
planetary candidate ever spotted: KOI 326.01, an approximately
Earth-sized planet orbiting in the habitable zone of its star. There was
much excitement; one astrophysicist even calculated the value of the new
planet as [1]exactly $223,099.93. But when an innocent fact-checker's
question sent one of the researchers back to look at some figures, she
noticed that the star's brightness was listed incorrectly in a reference
catalog, throwing the planet's properties into doubt. After jiggering the
calculations, the Kepler team now says that KOI 326.01 is [2]neither
Earth-sized nor in the habitable zone, and may actually be orbiting a
different star. The Kepler researcher says, 'We're seeing the scientific
method playing out in real time.' While this news is a bit of a downer,
Kepler is just getting going, and it's expected to find many, many more
Earth-like planets."

Zothecula writes "Binghamton University computer scientist Lijun Yin
thinks that using a computer should be a comfortable and intuitive
experience, like talking to a friend. As anyone who has ever yelled 'Why
did you go and do that?' at their PC or Mac will know, however, using a
computer is currently sometimes more like talking to an overly-literal
government bureaucrat who just doesn't get you. Thanks to [0]Yin's work
with things like emotion recognition, however, that might be on its way
to becoming a thing of the past."

Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts, spoke at the recent Game
Developers Conference about how he expects game platforms to evolve in
the future. Hawkins thinks [0]the role of web browsers as a platform will
greatly increase as the explosion of mobile device adoption continues.
"For all of the big media companies, this phase of disruption is dramatic
and happening fast. Where it's really going to lead is where the function
of the browser is going. ... The browser has taken over 2 billion PCs
it's going to be taking over a billion tablets over the next few years,
billions of mobile devices. It will end up in my opinion very strong on
the television. The browser is the platform of the future."

alphadogg writes "Just because you send an email anonymously doesn't mean
people can't figure out who you are anymore. A new technique developed by
researchers at Concordia University in Quebec could be used to [0]unmask
would-be anonymous emailers by sniffing out patterns in their writing
style from use of all lowercase letters to common typos. Their research,
published in the journal Digital Investigation, describes techniques that
could be used to serve up evidence in court, giving law enforcement more
detailed information than a simple IP address can produce."

now has a way of making [0]purely Internet-based phone calls. Making a
SIP call with a 'sip:' prefix, the Google Voice phone number and
@sip.voice.google.com skips the conventional phone network entirely,
saving users cellphone minutes. Disruptive Telephony tested it and found

[0]The new $39.5 million Fountaindale Public Library features:
flat-screen TVs, video games, self-checkout stations, a variety of
e-readers, and a cafe. Library officials say the new facility is a
blueprint for libraries of the future, and will focus on using new
technologies. From the article: "The Fountaindale Public Library, with
its state-of-the-art, Wi-Fi equipped space, is starkly different from the
previous antiquated library, a nearby one-story brick structure built in
1975 that awaits the wrecking ball. Officials are hopeful the new
facility attracts a demographic libraries haven't seen in a number of
years - young professionals."

stuck that DVD in there and started saying "yes, OK" to every resulting
dialog box, you sank the whole thing,' Cassidy writes. 'It doesn't take
10 minutes to sort that out; it requires a complete machine reload to
properly guarantee the infection is history. No, there is no neat and
handy way I've been keeping secret that allows you to retain your
extensive collection of stolen software licenses loaded on that laptop. I
