March 8 was the 100th observance of International Women's Day, and Suaad Allami's message from Iraq, Yvette Mulongo's work in the Congo, and Shiney Varghese's reflections on 100 years for women around the world all offer food for thought. Minnesota Corporal Andrew Wilfahrt was killed in action on February 27 in Afghanistan. His uncle, Alan Wilfahrt, offers three reflections on Andrew, war, and peace-making: Taps for Andrew, Andrew's wishes, and Andrew's guard.Hard times, hard choices: How should neighborhoods respond to the "New Normal?"![]() The Daily Planet's New Normal Project is a series of news stories and community conversations devoted to identifying community priorities as we face serious economic challenges. Moore vs. Hoff, Day 2The second day of the Jerry Moore vs. John Hoff trial brought some news for bloggers, some randomness and some very divergent testimonies over who is lying. Hoff and Moore have two very different stories, and each brought in witnesses to support their version of history. MORE » MUSIC | Gayngs Affiliyated Showcase leaves First Avenue happily exhausted![]() If it seemed unbelievable that I was walking home on yet another snowy night in this endless winter, it was just as unbelievable—though much more happily so—that I was walking home from a Gayngs show. The sprawling supergroup united by Ryan Olson for last year's blissful but complex disc Relayted are miraculously somehow still together; on Sunday night they played in Minneapolis for the first time since the epic Last Prom on Earth in May 2010, headlining First Avenue for a three-room mini-festival of acts who are, er, affiliyated with Gayngs members.MORE » Study: MN public workers more educated, still earn lessAs the legislative battle rages on across the state border in Wisconsin over public workers' bargaining rights, a new report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) shows Minnesota public employees earn on average nearly eight percent less than their private sector counterparts.MORE » Republicans introduce bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancyRepublicans in the Minnesota Legislature introduced a bill Monday that would ban abortion in Minnesota after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act states that fetuses can feel pain after the first 20 weeks and creates a revenue stream for the state to defend the measure against lawsuits if it passes.MORE » Inside the Daily Planet, 03/09/11THEATER | An effectively campy, creepy Cabaret from Frank Theatre by Bev Wolfe, TC Daily Planet • A seductive evening at the Kit Kat Club is provided by Frank Theatre's production of Cabaret. I have seen Cabaret performed on stage twice before but, despite a slow start, this production is the most compelling of the three. Under Wendy Knox's direction, the performance concentrates on two couples whose romance is intruded upon by the growing Nazi menace. The social pathology of Weimar Germany initially takes on a playful eroticism that turns ominous; portraying the enticing nature of evil. On International Women's Day an Iraqi leader has hope for her country's future by Mary Jane LaVigne, TC Daily Planet • Suaad Allami has a shy smile. A silk scarf frames her face, and is tucked around the thick coil of hair at her neck. Even wearing high heels, she looks short. But she seems in no way small. If Iraq is to recover from the disaster of our war, people like Suaad Allami will be why. Yvette Mulongo honored for work with women in the Congo by Jeanette Fordyce, TC Daily Planet • The Congo is located in central Africa. It has been a war zone since 1998 despite two peace accords, with more than three million people killed and more than a million displaced. The most affected areas still are the northeastern provinces, where young girls 10 to 17 are the most vulnerable. The prevalence of rape in the Congo has been described as the worst in the world. A U.N. report details the widespread use of rape as a weapon of war, and the increasing prevalence of rape by rebel and government soldiers, and by civilians. STYLE | University of Minnesota fashion design senior spotlight: Kelly Ver Duin by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • On February 19, University of Minnesota fashion design students displayed their best work in the atrium of Rapson Hall. NEW IN BLOGS THINK FORWARD | Reclaiming rights on International Women's Day centennial by Shiney Varghese • The year 2011 started with the news of food price hikes around the world pushing even more people, especially women, into hunger. But then along came images of women in Egypt in the forefront of a revolution to get rid of a government that has been in power for over 30 years! Victories such as the ones in Egypt are occasions for celebrating the strength and resilience of women even under the most oppressed circumstances, and their ability to defy prevalent stereotypes. PUBLIC POLICY FORUM | Minnesota and public employee pensions by Jim Davnie • The news these past ten days has been dominated by the proposal in Wisconsin to significantly limit collective bargaining rights for public employees. That has brought questions about the stability and funding of Minnesota public employee pensions. OPEN SECRETS MN | Fasten your seatbelts, privacy and open government in for bumpy night by Rich Neumeister • With ten weeks to go at the Legislature I am waiting for the bills I usually expect from the Department of Administration, and other state and local departments, agencies, and private groups which in their view makes government more open and efficient. My view is that a number of their initiatives can make government less accountable and transparent, create more secrets, and compromise an individuals privacy and civil liberties. ALL LEARNING, ALL THE TIME | Corporate reforms will not create excellent schools by Erik Peterson • Increase competitiveness. Focus on maximizing short-term output over long-term investment. Layoff workers. Squeeze more productivity from the remaining beleaguered workforce. Demonize unions that oppose the changes. And when the enterprise collapses, shut it down and outsource the work.
