What we're hearing
Need to know:

The U.N. appointed a new envoy to Libya and said it would dispatch a humanitarian team. But the campaign for international action was dealt a setback by an undercover operation involving British special forces that ended in farce. Meanwhile, the U.S. military is weighing its options. And here are new photos from the war-torn country.

Want to know:

It's carnival time again. Crowds danced in the streets of Port-au-Prince as Haiti celebrated its first carnival since last year's earthquake. And here are photos from Rio. And if you missed it: Will Brazil's next carnival queen be a cop in a bikini?

Dull but important:

Rain and snow during the past two weeks, together with a huge irrigation effort, appear to have saved much of the wheat crop in northern China from drought. This winter was the driest in perhaps 200 years in parts of China, the world's largest wheat producer.

Just because:

The number of people who see Brazil as having a positive influence in the world is rising rapidl, according to a BBC poll. South Africa posted the second biggest rise. Germany remained the most popular country, while the image of the U.S. improved for the fourth year in a row.

Alberto Granado, who died on this weekend aged 88, was the travelling companion of Che Guevara on their youthful journey across South America, subsequently celebrated in prose and on film as "The Motorcycle Diaries."

Wacky:

Scientists have established how the largest bone-cracking carnivore to have ever lived went about its business. The giant hyena roamed Africa more than 2.5 million years ago. Hyenas preferred to crack open bones high in marrow content, breaking into femur and tibia bones from the rear legs, and humerus bones from the front legs.
