Hugh Pickens writes writes "WebProNews reports that according to a new
survey, the more Facebook friends you have, the [0]more likely you are to
feel stressed out by the site. 'The results threw up a number of
paradoxes,' says Dr Kathy Charles, who led the study. 'For instance,
although there is great pressure to be on Facebook there is also
considerable ambivalence amongst users about its benefits.' Causes of
stress included deleting unwanted contacts, the pressure to be
entertaining, and having to use appropriate etiquette for different types
of friends. 'Like gambling, Facebook keeps users in a neurotic limbo, not
knowing whether they should hang on in there just in case they miss out
on something good.'"

Hugh Pickens writes writes "PC Magazine reports that the Commerce
Department has unveiled a national broadband inventory map, which will
allow the public to [0]see where high-speed Internet is available
throughout the country. Users can search by address, view data on a map,
or use other interactive tools to compare broadband across various
geographies, such as states, counties or congressional districts.
Commerce officials say the information can help businesses decide if they
want to move to a certain location, based on broadband availability. The
map, costing about $200 million and financed through the 2009 Recovery
Act, [1]shows that 5-10 percent of Americans lack broadband access at
speeds that support a basic set of applications. Another 36 percent lack
access to wireless service. Community anchor institutions like schools
and libraries are also 'largely underserved,' the data finds, and
two-thirds of surveyed schools subscribe to speeds lower than 25 Mbps and
only 4 percent of libraries subscribe to speeds greater than 25 Mbps.
'The National Broadband Map shows there are still too many people and
community institutions lacking the level of broadband service needed to
fully participate in the Internet economy,' says Larry Strickling,
assistant secretary of the National Telecommunications and Information
Administration (NTIA). 'We are pleased to see the increase in broadband
adoption last year, particularly in light of the difficult economic
environment, but a digital divide remains.'"

Velcroman1 writes "Two scientists at Yale University have built the
laser's first doppelganger: the anti-laser. While a conventional laser
emits a constant beam of light in one direction, the anti-laser simply
does the opposite. It takes that same steady light stream and interacts
with it in such a way that it absorbs and cancels out the light. And
scientists hope the strange creation could help the fight against cancer.
A. Douglas Stone, one of the two researchers behind the project, said he
came up with the idea for a 'nega-laser' [0]when working with equations
for a random laser with his partner in crime, Hui Cao. 'I figured, if we
just somehow illuminated the cavity, and replaced the gain medium with
something that tends to absorb light, we could essentially reverse the
process,' Stone said. Oh, that makes sense."

| Encrypting Phone Storage and Transmission? (2011 Version)

An anonymous reader writes "Soon I'll be moving to one of the hot,
culturally restrictive countries which has recently been in the news ...
and which monitors and filters web traffic. ISPs and cellular providers
are both owned by the government. Needless to say, I'm concerned about
privacy and am even posting to my fellow Slashdotters as an anonymous
coward. Which smart phones are the best for a) encrypted storage, and b)
encrypted transmission? I'm not worried about encrypting SMSs or
traditional voice traffic, but I would like all IP traffic as secure as
possible. Setting up a server in my less restrictive home country is an
option. What storage encryption and transmission encryption would you
recommend for that situation? I'm willing to buy yet another device, if
necessary. (No, I won't get a SatPhone.) I currently have a Nokia N900
running Maemo5 and another device running Symbian S60v3. I was hoping to
have a secure OS like BackTrack running on the N900, but it looks like
the software was never totally ported for the device."

PolygamousRanchKid writes with this sad snippet from the San Francisco
Chronicle: "We all know that Steve Jobs is sick. What's not known is
[0]how sick he is, and that's worrying investors of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)
this morning, as well as everyone else. Jobs did have pancreatic cancer a
few years ago, but he had a transplant and was able to come back to work.
Last time, he gave some kind of time frame for returning to work. This
time, he did not. Supposedly the National Enquirer is set to run pictures
of Jobs with him looking frail and gaunt. Jobs was spotted leaving the
Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California, according to
RadarOnline.com."

Lucas123 writes "A soon-to-be-released survey from CDW shows that
Americans trust their physicians to use their health information
responsibly, but they're very concerned that once in electronic format,
their personal health information [0]may suddenly show up on the Internet.
Their fears may not be unfounded. CDW said that survey data showed 30%
and 34% of doctors lack basic anti-virus software and network firewalls,
respectively. Most amusingly, however, nearly a quarter of the 1,000
patient respondents said they don't even trust themselves with access to
their own electronic health records."

schliz writes "When building a network from scratch, Argentine ants tend
to connect their nests in the way that, while more inconvenient for
individual ants, [0]requires the minimum amount of trail. Researchers
studying 'supercolonies' of the ants found them building networks that
closely resembled the mathematical shortest path a [1]Steiner tree.
They hope to apply their work to self-healing, organic computing networks
of self-organising sensors, robots, computers, and autonomous cars." This
story adds to the [2]earlier report of ants' networking prowess.

that will compete for the $30 million Google Lunar X Prize, the
competition to put a robot on the moon by 2015. To win the money, a
privately-funded team must successfully place a robot on the Moon's
surface that explores at least 500 meters and transmits high definition
video and images back to Earth. The first team to do so will claim a $20
