GOP's Beard wants more coal plants because God will fix global warming

Rep. Mike Beard (R-Shakopee) is pushing for more new coal-fired power plants in Minnesota, but the Shakopee Republican is undeterred by reports about the effects of carbon-emitting energy production on global warming. His reason: He believes God will prevent the planet from running out of fossil fuels while also eliminating the harms associated with climate change.MORE »

MUSIC | Justin Townes Earle at First Avenue: "I know better, but sometimes I just don't care" by Natalie Gallagher, TC Daily Planet • "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm a weak man. A couple of my weaknesses are ladies-well, now that's the sound I like!" said Earle, pausing while a few women in the audience screamed-"and fried chicken. And I can't decide which I like better...but let's face it, fried chicken is cheaper but it gives me a lot less to write songs about."

THEATER | Two strong plays about kids facing supreme challenges: Youth Performance Company's MEAN and SteppingStone Theatre's Four Little Girls by Betsy Gabler, TC Daily Planet • Two youth performances that have similar themes-tolerance, anger/hatred, ignorance, peacemaking, and the resilience of young people-are currently happening simultaneously here in the Twin Cities.

THEATER | Our Town by Yellow Tree Theatre: Excellent "community" theater by Christopher Kehoe, TC Daily Planet • Look sharp, friends: this unassuming little show in, of all places, Osseo is poised to be among the finest Twin Cities theater offerings in 2011. Bold words for mid-February, but Yellow Tree Theatre's latest is a winning effort that throws the gauntlet down to its metropolitan cousins.

Lily Tomlin at the State Theatre: Still makin' 'em laugh by Betsy Gabler, TC Daily Planet • It's Agnes! It's Ernestine! It's Lucille! Yes it is. And even more when you're lucky enough to catch the many personalities brought to life during "An Evening of Classic Lily Tomlin." Tomlin's tour stopped at the historic State Theatre last weekend after performances in Illinois, Kansas, and Wisconsin, but before California, Australia and beyond (including Biloxi, Mississippi's Hard Rock Cafe). ¡Olé!

HINDSIGHT | Arts are key to the core curriculum by Matt Caminiti • Part of Governor Dayton's budget focused on investments in education, especially for early childhood. This comes as welcome news to many parents, principals and teachers after years of underfunding and cuts.

SINGLE WHITE FRINGE GEEK | My play Leave: The unrelenting power of a mother's love by Matthew A. Everett • The wonderful and terrifying thing about good actors is, you can't relax. Good actors make a better playwright. One, because you live in fear of wasting their time by not writing a good role for them to dig into. Two, because they can do anything, so you have no limits on where you can go with a character.

MN PROGRESSIVE PROJECT | Can you support teachers and bash teacher unions? The myths and truths by Alec Timmerman • Public sector workers are under assault, and no public worker has been more maligned than the schoolteacher. What's worse, is that school teachers are being attacked from the usual suspects, but also former allies. As Scott Walker tries to disband unions to our east, and Tom Emmer claims waiters make too much, you can guarantee that the battle against teacher's unions is nothing more than a fight to weaken labor, the middle class, and public sector workers. You know that the anti-labor propaganda machine is in high gear when even our allies believe them. The fight against teacher unions is a fight to reform the human resources department, not the education department. Teachers are on the side of students. Their success is our success. You can't separate the health of the teaching profession from the health of our students. The truth is that no one wants reform that works more than teachers. We don't need merit pay to motivate us. We have our motivation right in front of us each day.

SIDEWALK DOG | Pizzeria pup: Lola gets a restaurant by Meredeth Barzen • If you haven't heard of it, you've been living under a rock: Southwest Minneapolis' Pizzeria Lola is kicking butts and taking names (literally-expect to wait for a table) in the suddenly quite crowded Twin Cities pizza scene. Not that you need an excuse to dig into some wood-fired pizza, but you might be interested to know that this new hot spot is named after co-owner Ann Kim's beloved Weimaraner.

THINK FORWARD | Inspiration from Egypt at the World Social Forum by Shefali Sharma • Friday's closing ceremony of the World Social Forum began with the news that Hosni Mubarak had resigned from office and led to a resounding cheer and celebration amongst the crowd. Egypt and Tunisia's people-led struggles had reverberated throughout the forum with intermittent marches of Eyptians and those in solidarity. In between assembly sessions of social movements, climate justice groups and those gearing towards Rio+20, several of us protested outside the Eyptian Embassy in Dakar on Friday to show support to those assembling in Tahrir Square in Cairo. Even as we shouted slogans, news travelled that Mubarak had actually resigned, this time for real.
