| Vintage Modern Knits Contemporary Designs Using Classic Techniques Courtney Kelley & Kate Gagnon Osborn 160 pages, 22 projects
| Yesterday Kathleen shared a great technique for tacking long floats in your colorwork. If you thought it was helpful, you can get even more tips and guides to traditional techniques in 22 modern, contemporary projects to knit in Vintage Modern Knits. The hats, mittens, cardigans, pullovers, socks, and more incorporate cables, Fair Isle and Intarsia, lace, and tons of other techniques, making each project fun to knit.
Designers and authors Courtney Kelley and Kate Gagnon Osborn share a bit about their inspiration for Vintage Modern Knits and their love of knitting:
On keeping the traditions of knitting alive through their designs... It's a great way to connect to history, especially women's and unwritten, everyday history which gets ignored. I think that's why a lot of us love reading things like Elizabeth Zimmermann. We also have a huge vintage pattern stash! It's amazing how much inspiration can be found on eBay, or your local library.
On learning to knit and design... We both started knitting as children, and our grandmothers taught us. Courtney started designing while working at an LYS and Kate while living and blogging in Boulder, CO.
The dedication [in Vintage Modern Knits] reads: 'This book is dedicated with much love to Julia Ann, Lucy, Yvette, and Verna, our very patient grandmothers who taught us a love of needle arts at a young age.
On their inspiration and the techniques used for the patterns in the book... Kate is a fan of colorwork, Courtney uses of lace and cables (I love charts). The Roositud and Bohus techniques appeal to us a lot, resurrecting the past through craft!
Most of the patterns started first with a technique: Bohus, Roositud, Aran. Then the sketch/swatch phase, and Kate won't stop knitting hats. We wanted all of the patterns to be both wearable and interesting to knit. Classic and subtle is always best! But as knitters, we always want to be challenged and enjoy the work. |
