legal cases, decisions, and precedents, we have demonstrated conclusively
that PG was making incorrect determinations regarding public domain

In general, Project Gutenberg is doing a tremendous service by making
available texts that have truly long since fallen out of copyright, but
they are clearly overstepping their original mandate. They are not merely
exploiting orphan works, but practicing a wholesale kidnapping of works

[0]MojoKid writes "IBM is one of a number of companies working on a
next-generation storage memory project and a recent discovery at Texas
A&M University is a [1]step forward for the company's racetrack memory.
Racetrack memory relies on a nanowire arranged perpendicular to the chip.
Current pulses across the nanowires allow data to be shifted as
necessary. In theory, racetrack memory could be the Holy Grail of
storage, capable of replacing both traditional hard drives and SSDs
simultaneously. Racetrack memory could solve multiple problems and
commercial implementations could offer hard drive-level density.
Performance and reliability would both be far superior to today's SSDs.
To date, IBM has [2]demo'd a three-bit racetrack configuration. It's a
start, but it's far from a shippable product at this juncture." What the
A&M researchers have come up with is "a way to pulse the current much
more efficiently and quickly."

couple of wrong tweaks made at China Telecom. Whether this was
intentional or not is unknown, but such routing accidents are all too
common online. While BGP is the de-facto protocol for inter-domain
routing on the Internet, actual routing occurs without checking whether
the originator of the route is authorized to do so. The global routing
system itself is made up of autonomous systems (AS) which are simply
loosely interconnected routing domains. Each autonomous system decides,
unilaterally, and even arbitrarily, to trust everything it hears from any
other AS, to use that information without validation, and to further
transmit that information to its other peers..."

alphadogg writes "IBM researchers have made a breakthrough in using
pulses of light to accelerate data transfer between chips, something they
say could [0]boost the performance of supercomputers by more than a
thousand times. The new technology, called CMOS Integrated Silicon
Nanophotonics, integrates electrical and optical modules on a single
piece of silicon, allowing electrical signals created at the transistor
level to be converted into pulses of light that allow chips to
communicate at faster speeds, said Will Green, silicon photonics research
scientist at IBM. The technology could lead to massive advances in the
power of supercomputers, according to IBM."

| Using Cinnamon In the Production of Nanoparticles

An anonymous reader writes "Scientists at the University of Missouri
[0]used cinnamon to replace almost all toxic chemicals needed for making
gold nanoparticles used in electronics and healthcare products.
Nanoparticle production requires the use of extremely dangerous and toxic
chemicals. While the nanotechnology industry is expected to produce large
quantities of useful nanoparticles in the near future, the entire
production process could be detrimental to the environment."

An anonymous reader writes "Astronomers have surveyed eight elliptical
galaxies, and found that we've [0]vastly underestimated the number of dim
red dwarf stars in these giant galaxies. When they used the new number of
red dwarfs in their calculations, they [1]tripled the total number of
known stars in the universe."

wiredmikey writes "A new format that YouTube has been testing for a while
officially launched today. YouTube is launching TrueView, [0]a new ad
format that lets users skip over ads they aren't interested in and
advertisers are actually okay with it. When a TrueView ad unit begins
playing, you'll notice a five second countdown timer as soon as that's
up, you'll see an arrow that will let you skip the remainder of the ad
and get back to the content you wanted to see, or you can choose to keep
on watching the ad."
