On the radar: Chicago singer-songwriter Andrew Bird moves from the Church of God to the Cathedral of Rock.MORE »

Under the radar: Wait a second, #Movember isn't just a hashtag? It's a real thing? Invented in Australia? To fight prostate cancer? "The moustache serves as the 'ribbon' and the vehicle by which participants raise awareness for men's health," says a press release announcing tonight's celebration for "Mo Bros" at Bootleggers. Needless to say, "Mo Sistas" (to use the official term: "'Mo Sistas' act as ambassadors for the 'Mo Bros'") are very welcome to join the party. The event starts at 8:00 and according to the Bootleggers website, "college night" starts at 7, so there's sure to be plenty of educated, socially conscious conversation to enjoy.

Judge rejects Family Council bid in gay marriage lawsuit

A judge has rejected an attempt by the Minnesota Family Council to intervene in a lawsuit challenging state law that bans same-sex marriage. Three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit against the state of Minnesota earlier this year arguing that the Defense of Marriage Act signed into law in 1997 violates the state Constitution.MORE »

THEATER | Win-win: David Sedaris's "Santaland Diaries" presented by Frank Theatre at Hennepin Stages and by Theatre Limina at the Bryant-Lake Bowl

"Dear Diary,

I know I don't write much, but it is the holidays, and I'm starting to stress a bit so I figure that it'd be good to vent and get some things off my chest..."MORE »

After seeing back-to-back theatrical productions of The Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris over this past weekend, I chucked my diary. Who needs it when Sedaris one-ups any stress I may have by telling us the true life tale of Crumpet the Macy's Elf (himself) working in the weeks before Christmas. You can just imagine Crumpet exclaiming, "Pour me a scotch, Santa, and let me tell you how ridiculous humanity can be during the holiday season."

Inside the Daily Planet

THEATER | Penumbra Theatre's Black Nativity: Now's the Time keeps family in focus
by Leslie Kruempel, TC Daily Planet
I admittedly wasn't in a very Christmasy mood as I headed to St. Paul's Penumbra Theatre for opening night of Black Nativity: Now's the Time last Friday. It wasn't even December yet, after all, and leftover Thanksgiving turkey was still occupying space in my fridge. But I dare you to sit through even just 15 minutes of this annual musical celebration and not feel at least a little Christmas spirit sneak into your soul.

Twin Cities first Orthodox Christian charity opens in St. Paul
by Yeoryia Christoforides, TC Daily Planet
Though charitable giving in the Twin Cities has dwindled, the Orthodox Christian community has established its first organized charity ministry in Minneapolis.

Riverside Avenue to get a facelift
by Andre Eggert, Minnesota Daily
With cracks and potholes lining Riverside Avenue, the road—built in the 1950s—is in need of reconstruction. The state rated the road in "poor to fair" condition, but that will change in the next year.

WHO IS THAT? | Courtney McLean, queen of naughtybilly

THE OPTIMISTIC PESSIMIST | Marwencol and Dogtooth: Revelation and revolution

THE HOLLISH PAPERS | Something smells fishy, Sheriff Fletcher
by Karen Hollish • I'd hoped to savor a stack of Terrorism Information Briefs last holiday weekend, but the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department is still ignoring my Data Practices Act request. In our only conversation, Public Information Officer Holli Drinkwine said the department doesn't have any records of its anti-terrorism work.

FLYOVER LAND | December festivals, part 1
by Amy Rea • The month of December is an exceptionally busy one for this festival-fond state. To try and get as much coverage as possible without making a web page that's a mile long, I'm going to report weekly this month. Today's installment will include events through Sunday, Dec. 5. Check back next week for more.

CLIMATE CHANGE | The Conference Begins: COP16, day 1
by Andy Pearson • He could pinch, twirl, and draw on the virtual globe in front of him, much like seeing someone operate a four-foot iPhone. It struck me as a distraction to spend such resources on displaying relatively widely-available science (which most conference participants are already familiar with) and omitting any discussion of potential political actions to take in the face of this science, but I suppose it's the best the U.S. has to bring to the international table at the moment. I'm sure it's a tough position to be in: when your country lacks the political will to take action, what else can you talk about? Wow 'em with TouchTables.

BLUESTEM PRAIRIE | Vote Wars: emboldened by praise of sportsmanship, Emmer campaign launches frivolous ballot challenges
by Sally Jo Sorensen • The Emmer campaign started the week on the high road, with media praising the Delano Republican, but I suspect much of the appreciation may fade before this thing runs its course. It's fading before the early winter sun sets.

MINNESOTA PROGRESSIVE PROJECT | Pink slips on Emmer volunteers are symbolic
by Grace Kelly • I have been livestreaming the recount for the Uptake. Today I am taking part of the day off. Only Hennepin County is having some controversy on the large numbers of challenges. And that is the Emmer campaign scrambling to find all challenges possible. The bottom line is that the numbers are not there.
