Today a remake of the Dreamcast classic [0] Crazy Taxi launched on the
PlayStation Network, with the Xbox Live Arcade release coming November
24th. The graphics have been updated to 720p, but [1]licensing issues for
the soundtrack and some in-game locations resulted in noticeable changes.
Quoting the Opposable Thumbs blog: "The Offspring, along with Bad
Religion, provided the game's soundtrack in the original release. These
songs, along with the sound of that announcer, went a long way toward
creating the game's mood. In the new version, they have been replaced by
completely forgettable pop-punk tracks, and it's a downgrade. ... That's
not the only thing that's missing. The game originally featured licensed
locations. Customers would need to be dropped off at the Pizza Hut, for
instance. These companies didn't spring for the advertising in the game's
rerelease, but the buildings weren't updated to look like anything else;
the result is a game that looks like its filled with closed-down fast
food restaurants. ... this is an interesting look at what went on to
become a cult classic. Still, this is no replacement for my original
copy."

| MPAA Dismisses COICA Free Speech Concerns

An anonymous reader writes "The EFF has gone into detail about why it
opposes '[0]The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act,' or
COICA. It has the potential to give the Department of Justice the power
to shut down any domestic website, or block any foreign website it so
chooses, setting the stage for [1]Internet censorship in the United
States. Addressing the free speech concerns, MPAA chief Bob Pisano
[2]dismissed the First Amendment issues, saying '...the First Amendment
was not intended as a shield for those who steal, irrespective of the
means.'"

| New Imaging Method Reveals Brain Connections

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at the Stanford University School
of Medicine, applying a state-of-the-art imaging system to brain-tissue
samples from mice, have been able to quickly and accurately locate and
count the [0]myriad connections between nerve cells in unprecedented
detail, as well as to capture and catalog those connections' surprising
variety. A typical healthy human brain contains about 200 billion nerve
cells, or neurons, linked to one another via hundreds of trillions of
tiny contacts called synapses. It is at these synapses that an electrical
impulse traveling along one neuron is relayed to another, either
enhancing or inhibiting the likelihood that the second nerve will fire an
impulse of its own. One neuron may make as many as tens of thousands of
synaptic contacts with other neurons, said Stephen Smith, PhD, professor
of molecular and cellular physiology and senior author of a paper
describing the study, to be published Nov. 18 in Neuron."
