Sisters' Camelot: Feeding Minneapolis, one bus at a time

"People know us on the streets, recognize our bus," said David Senn, a gardener and bus driver for Sisters' Camelot, a working free organic food collective in Minneapolis.  "It is nice to feed people, especially starving people out on the streets.  It is satisfying to feed hungry people such good food." Senn has been with Sisters' Camelot for eight of the organization's 14 years, working 10 to 40 hours per week as needed.MORE »

Arts Orbit Radar 11/18/10

What's happening this week

Thursday, November 18

On the radar: Sol LeWitt is to visual art what John Cage is to music—someone who seemed very clever in his day, but whose stature has posthumously risen to twentieth-century titan. When Sol LeWitt: 2D+3D opens alongside Yves Klein: With the Void, Full Powers, the Walker will be holding two master keys to contemporary art.MORE »

Under the radar: It's a big night for dance in Minneapolis. First, watch the Zenon performers zing through their fall season (a tribute to women choreographers), then head to the Varsity for the debut of Anthem Heart's new monthly dance night, called Recess; with Playatta on v-jay duty, there will be a lot more to look at than just your neighbors shaking their rumps to Estate's DJ set.

E.g. bailey: "We have been determined not to allow spoken word to be a fad in Minnesota"
by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet
Iconic spoken word performer e.g. bailey emerged in the late 90s, knocking around here, getting his presence felt there, and made a strong impression as part of the performing ensemble Sirius B when they made their 1996 Illusion Theater debut with Monday Morning Body Count, a spotty but compelling work commenting on the rate of homicide among black men. From there, he tirelessly threw his shoulder to the wheel and is now the most vastly accomplished proponent of spoken word in either of the Twin Towns.

SAINT PAUL ALMANAC | November: A Karen immigration story
by November Paw and Ron Peterson • Not everyone in my family made it to Saint Paul. My parents were village people, until the villages were burnt down. Hiding in the jungle, their food was stolen; their friends and relatives starved. Our people, the Karen, were attacked because we have a different culture, language, and religion. My father was shot through his hand. It took a long time to heal.

BLUESTEM PRAIRIE | Brian Melendez to the DFL Central Committee: the glass is both half empty and half full
by Brian Melendez • I have been taking the time since Election Day as an opportunity for listening and learning. Although some people seemed to feel that they had everything figured out by the next morning, I didn't (and I still don't). But now that some time has passed, and we have all gained some perspective on the results, and some context that may not have been immediately evident, I'm writing in order to share my first-draft thoughts about those results and how we interpret and respond to them.
