donniebaseball23 writes "Reporting on new research from WIREs Cognitive
Science, IndustryGamers writes: '[0]Action games like Call of Duty and
Halo can enhance visual attention, the ability that helps us focus on
relevant visual information. The mental mechanism allows people to select
pertinent visual information and ignore irrelevant information. It
suggests that action titles can be used to augment military training,
educational tools, and correct visual deficits.' Shawn Green, co-author
of the study, commented, 'At the core of these action video game-induced
improvements appears to be a remarkable enhancement in the ability to
flexibly and precisely control attention, a finding that could have a
variety of real-world applications. For example, those in professions
that demand "super-normal" visual attention, such as fighter pilots,
would benefit enormously from enhanced visual attention, as their
performance and lives depend on their ability to react quickly and
accurately to primarily visual information."

Eurogamer reports that a number of [0]Blizzard job listings went up today
for top-level console developers. The [1]listings [2]were [3]posted under
the Diablo 3 heading, leading to speculation about a console port of the
upcoming game. [4]A Blizzard representative soon responded, saying, "...
were currently exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles. As weve
said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console
platform, and were interested in seeing what talent out there might be
interested in contributing to such a project. To further reiterate whats
posted on the home page: this is not an announcement of a console title.
We are first and foremost developing Diablo III for Windows and Mac PCs,
and we have no intention of allowing a console interpretation to delay or
otherwise affect the release of the game." Having [5]played Diablo 3 at
Blizzcon, I can say that the game would very easily make the transition
to consoles. An Xbox 360 or PS3 controller would almost perfectly fit all
necessary gameplay functions. That said, they could just as easily be
porting one of the older games, building a new mini-game to get their
feet wet, or getting started on Diablo 4. Time will tell.

interested in The Crater, and would always tell friends about it. It is
roughly 1,200 feet across and 120 feet deep, and has a strange vibe about
it. When you walk up to it, you feel like something really big happened
here. Either the mother of all caves is down there, or a large object
smashed into this place a long, long time ago. I bought aerial photos
when I was twelve and later sent images from GIS to a geologist at a
local university. He pretty much laughed me out of his office, saying
that it was a sinkhole. He did wish me luck, however. It may be sinkhole.
Who knows? Last week I borrowed a metal detector and went poking around,
and have found the [1]strangest shrapnel pieces I have ever seen. They
are composed of a metal that reacts strongly to acids. The largest piece
so far reacted with tap water and dish-washing detergent. My second trip
today yielded lots of [2]strange new pieces of metal, and hopefully, one
day the truth will be known. Backyard science is so much fun. And who
knows; if it is indeed a cave, maybe Cerberus resides there."

CWmike writes "Facebook's new messaging system may not be a Gmail killer,
but it's definitely another blow in the growing battle between two
Internet bigwigs. Facebook took the wraps off what it's calling [0]a
modern messaging system on Monday. The new system is designed to handle
the convergence of different kinds of messages Facebook messages, IMs,
SMS and e-mail and bring them together under a single social umbrella.
The system also allows users to have a facebook.com email address, though
it will work with other e-mail systems like Gmail and Yahoo. Facebook CEO
Mark Zuckerberg is adamant that it's not intended to replace e-mail, but
industry analysts say the new system will [1]almost certainly draw some
users away from Yahoo mail and Google's Gmail. Meanwhile, Google CEO Eric
Schmidt told Computerworld that [2]he's not worried at all about
Facebook's new 'Social Inbox.' 'More competition is always good because
it makes the market larger,' Schmidt said, charging that journalists were
hyping the rivalry: 'As a group, you all are focused on the competition
rather than the market getting larger. It brings more people in. We are
all served by having everybody in the world get online.'"

Two months ago, we discussed news that Realtime Worlds' action MMO APB
[0]closed its doors only a few months after launch, when it became clear
that player interest and subscriber numbers couldn't begin to recoup the
[1]massive development cost. A few days ago, a company called Reloaded
Productions, owned by free-to-play publisher GamersFirst, [2]acquired all
the rights and assets to APB. The company plans to relaunch the game as
APB: Reloaded in the first half of 2011, abandoning its unusual business
model in favor of free-to-play accounts [3]supplemented by
microtransactions and premium services.

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ciaran_o_riordan writes "The US Trade Representative has published a text
which, subject only to a last legal review, is proposed to be [0]the
final text of ACTA. The [1]differences between this text and last month's,
from the Tokyo round, are mostly cosmetic but there's an important
positive change giving signatories the option of excluding patents from
section 2. As [2]for software patents, most harm has been avoided. If
signatories make use of the section 2 exclusion option, there might be no
harm at all. Lobbying for this will be important. Meanwhile, the many
problems regarding Digital Restrictions Management, and the extra powers
given to businesses to obtain personal and identifying information about
accused copyright infringers "in the Digital Environment" are still there
(mostly section 5). Earlier texts were much worse. The improvements in
recent months are surely due to public outcry, leaving us indebted to the
anonymous friends who scanned and leaked the [3]various secret versions
and the activists who made text versions and spread them across the
Internet. There's a chance we can still influence the text in this legal
review phase, but the bigger task ahead will be working on the national
implementations. It's not yet clear what procedure the US will require
for [4]its own ratification."

obvious action to Evangelical Christians in Brazil is to ban its use.
Hopefully they don't mispronounce SCSI and find themselves lusting after

An interesting use for the app would be to use it as a dialing front end

isn't an option for now. It seems like non-US users can get the app if
they have a US iTunes account. You can create a US iTunes account without
