MN VOICES | Jim Northrup writes on the Rez Road

For more than 21 years, Jim Northrup has been one of the premier literary voices of the American Indian and the Midwest writers' communities. He is a playwright, a fiction writer, a newspaper columnist and teacher, but he calls himself a bullshitter - another name, he says, for a storyteller.MORE »

They want a DREAM: Minnesota's undocumented students talk about their future

David* has been living in St. Paul since 2003, when his family decided to move from Mexico to the United States. For them the move was a long wished-for family reunion - his father and other family members were already living in Minnesota. David was 14 when his family brought him here.  MORE »

Leading up to recount, GOP files suit against two counties

The Republican Party of Minnesota and Tom Emmer's gubernatorial campaign filed a civil suit against Pine and St. Louis counties on Friday saying the two have been too slow in getting requested documents related to the election.  MORE »

Student drama confronts hard realities in North Minneapolis

With only a few seats empty in the Capri Theater, PYC Arts & Technology High School students showed us what one could say, borrowing from the dialect, was some "pretty heavy shit." Getting Out, a Story of Hope, Forgiveness, & Redemption, performed one time for the public, November 11, and was videotaped for possible playback in schools. MORE »

Stimulated and growing: Multiplying the Recovery Act's Minnesota impact

Despite criticism, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 did much of what President Obama intended. The stimulus created or saved 3.6 million U.S. jobs, roughly 60,000 in Minnesota, boosted rebuilding of our crumbling infrastructure, invested in education, kept the unemployed from falling further into poverty and provided tax breaks to 95 percent of Americans. Respected economists say it helped prevent a depression.  MORE »

MUSIC | Free Energy's Paul Sprangers: "We see ourselves as being a Minnesota band" by Leslie Kruempel, TC Daily Planet • There are a few Minnesota bands whose live performances have a reputation for being especially electrifying. City Pages' 2009 Picked to Click winner Red Pens are one; garage-punk rockers the Goondas (on this year's list) are another. And while not technically local, Philadelphia-based band Free Energy also fit squarely in this category.

Doing the right thing in Minneapolis: St. Mary's takes charge of stormwater runoff by Sarah Sponheim, Uptown Neighborhood News • The golden dome of St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church presides over the East Calhoun neighborhood and serves as a landmark above the lakeshore. From the church, large windows and a terraced patio afford a sublime view across Lake Calhoun. Historically, though, St. Mary's has had a less than ideal relationship with the water below.  Rain and melting snow have run off the property - downhill, through storm sewers, into the lake. Typically, stormwater runoff carries with it all manner of pollutants, from discarded pop cans, trash and pet feces to gasoline and engine oil residue. The city of Minneapolis is actively encouraging residents, businesses and institutions such as churches and schools to mitigate stormwater runoff.

OPINION | Infrastructure labor in Duluth by Tom Niemisto, Minnesota 2020 • Thanks to the federal economic recovery, labor unions in Duluth have seen worker unemployment fall in recent months.  They perform important construction and maintenance work on roads, bridges and breakwaters in the twin harbors.  But as the stimulus starts to run out Minnesota needs to continue where the feds left off.

REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK | Hey, Sheriff Fletcher-I've got a question by Karen Hollish • Three emails, five voice mails and 23 days later, I finally heard back from the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office about our Data Practices Act request.

BLANDIN ON BROADBAND | Social media use by Minnesota elected officials by Ann Treacy • This week Representative Michelle Bachmann celebrated her social media engagement as an example of what she could bring to Republican leadership.

MINNESOTA BUDGET BITES | Two critical budget numbers coming soon by Scott Russell • As we have reported earlier, there is reason to worry. Global Insight, the state's national economic consultant, has lowered its expectations for national economic growth. That suggests the new governor and legislature could face new and growing deficits.

BARATARIA | A Thanksgiving story by Erik Hare • It naturally comes up in my family just before Thanksgiving every year. The Puritans' deliverance to America is billed as a search for religious freedom, something which is a core value of our nation. It's good that we celebrate such a thing, but do the Puritans really deserve credit for it? The short answer is no, they do not, because they were seeking to establish their own theocracy - and across the ocean where no one would bother them seemed like the perfect place.

NEWS DAY | We love St. Paul! by Mary Turck • The Gallup survey is done, the Knight Foundation Soul of the Community report is written, and the verdict is that we St. Paul-ites love our city. And that's important, according to the researchers, because of a strong correlation between good feelings and growing economies.
