Need To Know: The Syrian National Council - a self-styled transitional government-in-exile that unites leftists, Islamists and other Syrian opposition factions - has begun setting up shop in Turkey. Representatives of the popular uprising in Syria are working toward greater legitimacy and international recognition. Turkey's support doesn't seem to be hurting that cause. |
Want To Know: American forces on Thursday lowered the US flag in Iraq, as the last troops are withdrawn after nearly nine years of war. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta thanked troops in a formal ceremony marking the end of the US military campaign in Iraq, and the closure of the military's headquarters in Baghdad. |
Dull But Important: Most CEOs of large companies aren't planning on adding workers in the next six months, according to a survey from the Business Roundtable released Wednesday. Surveying 130 chief executives between October 31 and November 18, the Business Roundtable found that 35 percent plan to add workers in the first half of 2012, down from 36 percent in the prior quarter, and 42 percent plan to keep their staffing levels where they are, up from 40 percent in the previous quarter, Bloomberg Businessweek reported. |
Just Because: One thing that has always eluded the underpaid nerds around the world is how to make a living on their obsession with gaming. In parts of Asia, creative businessmen have begun to figure it out. In China and Vietnam, for instance, companies known as "gold farms" to Western gamers are employing real-life laborers in ever-growing numbers. They sit at computers and mine for digital gold in popular multiplayer online role-playing games like World of Warcraft (or WoW to those in the know), which the companies then sell to, mainly, Western players. |
Strange But True: A woman in the UK will be jailed for 168 days and banned from owning animals for 10 years after putting her neighbor's pet into the microwave as an act of revenge, the BBC reported. Gina Robins, 31, was found guilty on Wednesday of causing the animal unnecessary suffering. |
