1. Back for fifths, the Twin Cities Literary Death Match returns to the Twin Cities Thursday night for a new round of fightin' words that usually don't end up in bloodshed. In the ring this time at the Nomad is Peter Bognanni, Rob Callahan, Cole "Inky" Sarar, and Becky Lang.MORE »

Who IS that, and what have we learned?

October 27 marks the first anniversary of the feature "Who is that?" The first person to be profiled was Rob Callahan, but he wasn't the inspiration for the column: that was Jon Davis. The busy musician, with his unmissable beard and distinctive dance style, seems to show up at one venue or another almost every night, and I kept finding myself wondering, "Who is that guy?" Now I know–and so do you.MORE »

Students worry about new plan

In past years, St. Paul students could apply to any high school in the district and get bus transportation to that school, if there was enough room.

When Olivia Nofzinger was an eighth grader last year in the St. Paul Public School District, Central High School was her first choice high school. She was on the high school's swim team that year and had a lot of friends.MORE »

OPINION | Occupation U.S.A.

As the Occupy movement grows, pushback continues from some conservative quarters. Hippie-punching is easy, and it's been a while since there's been a truly substantial series of non-Tea Party protests, so I can in part understand their happiness to spar with an old foil in new clothes.MORE »

THEATER | The K of D, an Urban Legend at Illusion Theater: A ghost story without the haunting by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet • Renata Friedman, making her Twin Cities debut at Illusion Theater in the area premiere of Laura Schellhardt's The K of D, an urban legend, is of noteworthy talent. Energetic and artfully animated with a solid command of character, she deftly entertains and easily sustains the solo performance of just under an hour and a half long.

MUSIC | Megafaun at the Cedar Cultural Center: A mega-fun ! time by Tatiana Craine, TC Daily Planet • Smoke hung low amongst the packed gathering of twenty-somethings donning off-brand hoodies and hiking boots. Megafaun huddled in a semi-circle near the front of the stage as the crowd crooned at the band, "Come on ease your worried mind." And while it sounds strange that an audience might perform for a band, the evening had subtly progressed into true collaboration between the musicians and the swaying crowd.

OPINION | When rural schools merge by John Van Hecke, Minnesota! 2020 • Thirty-odd years ago, I felt that Walnut Grove's schools should merge with Tracy's. I was a Walnut Grove high school student. My opinion didn't carry the day. Thirty-odd years later, that merger is beginning to take shape.

THE OPTIMISTIC PESSIMIST | Wisconsin's Flyway Film Fest garners international attention by Jim Brunzell • The 2011 Flyway Film Festival in Pepin and Stockholm, Wisconsin will be taking place this weekend, October 20-23. I'll be heading down not only as a film patron, but for the first time! , I've been asked to be on a film jury: the Narrative Featur! e jury. I've twice been on regular government jury duty, but I'm guessing this will be more fun than sitting in a cramped room with a bunch of strangers deciding someone's fate. Being on a film festival jury will still mean sitting in a (dark) room with a bunch of strangers but at least we'll be enjoying ourselves watching some brave foreign and American Independent films, with many haven't screened in Minnesota or Wisconsin. I'll be on the jury with filmmaker Gary King (FFF 2010 selection What's Up Lovely) and Pepin, Wisconsin resident and founder of the popular Harbor View café, Stuffy Stevens.

LIT LYFE | The six best things about the Twin Cities Book Festival by Courtney Algeo • This year marked the 11th anniversary of the Twin Cities Book F! estival, created and hosted by Rain Taxi, and it was my very first time. Not only was it my first time attending the event, but it was also my first time seated behind a table at the festival. Sure, I've spent my share of time at various comic book conventions, large and small alike, as both patron of and saleswoman to a room awash with nerds of all sorts; however, the Twin Cities Book Festival was its own beast, with its own nerds, and its own set of wonders to behold.

WHO IS THAT? | Andy Sturdevant, Renaissance man-about-town by Jay Gabler • "I think the secret to being able to blend in anywhere is to look a little out of place everywhere."

HINDSIGHT | Look to the future on Ford Parkway by Conrad deFiebre • For the hundreds of autoworkers who will be displaced when Ford Motor Co. shutters its Twin Cities Assembly Plant in St. Paul on Dec. 19, there will be tearful farewells and fond memories of a disappearing industrial era in Minnesota. After 86 years of operation in the Highland Park neighborhood, Ford is closing one of our area's last great manufacturing facilities for good.

ANOTHER VIEW | Black voices at Lynx parade by Charles Hallman • I always instinctively seek out Blacks and other people of color at big events because their thoughts and views are often overlooked by mainstream media. That's how I worked last week's parade crow! d celebrating Minnesota's first pro basketball championship in 57 years.
