[0]t14m4t writes "While the Linux experience has improved dramatically
over the years (remember the days of Kernel version 2.0? or even 1.2?),
Tech Republic [1]revisits some of the more-fondly-remembered artifacts of
the Linux of years past. From the article: 'Of all the admin tools I have
used on Linux, the one I thought was the best of the best was linuxconf.
From this single interface, you could administer everything and I mean
EVERYTHING on your Linux box. From the kernel on up, you could take
care of anything you needed. With the dumbing down of the Linux operating
system (which was actually a necessity for average user acceptance),
tools like this have disappeared. Its too bad. An admin tool like this
was ideal for serious administrators and users.'"

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), which is

adequacy and effectiveness of US trading partners' protection of

IIPA for the watch list, [1]13 were recommended for placement on the
USTR's 'Priority Watch List.' These countries include Argentina, Canada,
Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Costa Rica, the Philippines,
Spain, Ukraine, and Vietnam. While previous reports have focused on
physical piracy, this year's emphasizes cracking down on online piracy."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes writes "The Washington Post reports that [1]the
army has brought twenty-two new charges including the Article 104
offence of 'aiding the enemy' that carries a potential death sentence
against Pfc. Bradley E. Manning, a former intelligence analyst accused of
leaking hundreds of thousands of classified military and diplomatic
documents to the anti-secrecy Web site WikiLeaks. The new charges, filed
under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, include wrongfully causing
intelligence to be published on the Internet, knowing that it will be
accessed by the enemy, that US officials have asserted could put soldiers
and civilians at risk. However the prosecution has notified Manning's
attorneys that it will not recommend the death penalty and the charge
sheet, like the original set of accusations, [2]contains no mention by
name of the enemy to which the US military is referring. Manning's
supporters reacted to the new charges with dismay. 'I'm shocked that the
military opted to charge Pfc. Bradley Manning today with the capital
offense of 'aiding the enemy,' says Jeff Paterson, project director of
Courage to Resist, which has raised money for Manning's defense. 'It's
beyond ironic that leaked US State Department cables have contributed to
revolution and revolt in the Middle East, yet an American may be
executed, or at best face life in prison, for being the primary
whistleblower.'"

daughter this morning talking about the future of Facebook and how it's
likely that they will not be around forever (or at least not at the same

devices nowadays have direct access to the Internet and even to Facebook
and once the images are uploaded they are eventually deleted to make room
for more. How do we make sure we can access or backup those files in case
Zuckerberg decides to sell out to Google or Microsoft and they do away
with everyone's profiles?"

linuxwrangler writes "It's used in Java. It's used in nearly every flavor
of UNIX/Linux. In PostgreSQL, Oracle and other databases. Several RFCs
refer to it. But where does the timezone database come from? I never gave
it much thought but would have assumed that it was under the purview of
some standards body somewhere. It's not. Since the inception of the
database Arthur David Olson has maintained the database, coordinated the
mailing list and volunteers and provided a release platform and now he is
retiring. IANA is developing a [0]transition strategy. Jon Udell has an
interesting [1]literary appreciation of the timezone database."
