Twin Cities neighborhoods grapple with the "New Normal"
by Bruce Johansen, TC Daily Planet
"A code word for disinvestment in the public sector." That's the New Normal, according to Sheldon Mains, co-president of the Seward Neighborhood Group (SNG) [and chair of the TC Media Alliance board of directors]. Mains says that disinvestment is a blow to neighborhood organizations, which can no longer rely on the levels of city and state funding they've become accustomed to. Under the New Normal, nonprofits like SNG find themselves depending less on paid staff, more on volunteers-difficult, Mains says, because fewer people have time to offer. Neighborhood organizations are also forced to ask for donations more than they have in the past, a challenge when individuals are financially strapped and fearful, and simultaneously receiving more requests to help fund worthy causes.

Editor's Note: Justin Schell was in Wisconsin on February 26, and shared these photos from the protest with TC Daily Planet. Pam Colby contributed a video of a rousing rendition of "This Land Is Your Land," from the solidarity protest at the Minnesota State Capitol, and The Uptake has an hour of video from the Madison protest, where they estimated the crowd at 70-100,000.
MOVIES | Academy Awards makeup artists and hairstylists demonstrate why they were nominated
by Barb Teed, TC Daily Planet
BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA—I always enjoy the Academy Awards' Makeup and Hairstylists Symposium in the Grand Lobby of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Last year it was thrilling to see how Star Trek characters evolved. This year's outstanding film achievements in the make-up category were just as thrilling. The Wolfman Creature FX Creative Supervisor Dave Elsey was demonstrating his technique.

MUSIC | Biffy Clyro rock the 7th Street Entry like an arena
by David Jarnstrom, TC Daily Planet
Those who braved the trek were treated to an almost two-hour Wembley Stadium-sized rock concert crammed into the cozy confines of one of the smallest clubs in town. The Biff—comprising frontman Neil and the twin-brother rhythm section of Ben (drums) and James (bass) Johnston—ripped through their 23-song set with the urgency of a band playing their last gig on Earth.
THEATER | Guthrie Theater screens a riveting King Lear, direct from London
by Caitlin McHugh, TC Daily Planet
It is not every day that the average theatergoer gets to experience an intimate production the caliber of Michael Grandage's King Lear. The evening of February 21, 2011, the Guthrie Theater was the only Upper Midwest venue to participate in the UK's National Theatre Live high-definition screening project, bringing the Donmar Warehouse's spectacular production to thousands of viewers. As a student of early modern drama and Shakespeare, I jumped at the chance to experience a theater production that many scholars dream of attending. Lear is often regarded as one of Shakespeare's masterpieces, and Grandage (director) and Sir Derek Jacobi (King Lear) teamed up to provide an emotionally jolting rendition.

by Sarah M. Rattanavong-Wash, TC Daily Planet
At three o'clock last Friday, about 50 protesters of Middle Eastern descent, ranging in age from twenty-somethings to people in their sixties, many of them from Libya, gathered in the 12 degree weather outside the Minnesota State Capitol to demand that the United States take "immediate, enforceable action" against the state repression and mass murder of pro-democracy activists in Libya.

U.S. Congresswoman McCollum decries big cuts for little kids
by Nancy Johnson, TC Daily Planet
A group of forty low-income parents in St. Paul's Rondo neighborhood sat in quiet seriousness last week, waiting for U.S. Representative Betty McCollum's visit to their Head Start program. They came to hear about the fate of federal funding for programs like the Ruth Benner Head Start Center in St. Paul.
MUSIC | Gaelic Storm at the Fitzgerald Theater: Photos and a retrospective live-tweet
by Stacy Schwartz, TC Daily Planet
Someday my phone will actually have enough battery power for me to actually tweet a show. When this happens I'll be able to just cut and paste from Twitter and be done with my review. However, since this was not the case at Gaelic Storm on Thursday night, I hope you'll put up with my "what should have been."

Oak Street Cinema destruction approved by unanimous vote of the Heritage Preservation Commission
by Sheila Regan, TC Daily Planet
On March 1, Minneapolis's Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) voted unanimously to approve demolition of the Oak Street Cinema, following the staff's recommendation. The applicant seeking to demolish the historic building was Doran Companies, who intend to demolish it in order to build a six-story, mixed-use, student housing development called Oak Street Flats. The HPC had approved demolition previously in 2008, but the building was never demolished.
MOVIES | Backstage at the Academy Awards: Filthy dreams and solidarity with Wisconsin
by Barb Teed, TC Daily Planet
HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA—One of the best parts of being a credentialed press member with the Academy Awards is seeing my fellow journalists all dressed up in gowns and tuxedoes. We really don't dress up that much on a regular assignment; casual is usually the code.

BOOKS | Books & Bars selection Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold: Strange magic
by Courtney Davison, TC Daily Planet
After two weeks spent with Glen David Gold's 2001 novel Carter Beats the Devil (one of them putting it off, or slowly turning a page or two, then putting the book down in favor of something more exciting), I finished the book at 5:00 p.m. tonight, and then took a nap until 5:45 p.m. During that time, I dreamt of magic. The dreams weren't necessarily of Carter and the endless list of characters that accompany him during his misadventures; however, it was clear that Gold had charted the course for my afternoon slumber.

by Galit Breen • Yippy! It's March! In Minnesota Spring is not quite in the air yet. But, still: It's March! I have the bonafide promise that coming soon, just around the corner in fact, are green grass, sun kissed faces, drippy popsicles and, of course: PURIM!
POKING AROUND | Memories of Maple Hill Cemetery remain in Northeast Minneapolis
by Mary Treacy • One of the entrancing stories of Northeast history surrounds the origins of Beltrami Park, that inviting plot of land at Polk and Broadway, most easily identified by the bocce ball courts, just one of Beltrami Park's living reminders of the Italian-American heritage of the neighborhood. The fact is, the Beltrami Park site was Maple Hill Cemetery from 1857 until 1890 when it morphed to Maple Hill Park until 1948.
BLANDIN ON BROADBAND | How do you feel about Net Neutrality?
by Ann Treacy • We had some resolution to Net Neutrality last December. It was a win for proponents of Net Neutrality - but not a strong win. In the last month, there's been an effort to reverse those decisions made last year. In fact, yesterday was the day the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology House Commerce Committee was set to vote on a resolution of disapproval to reverse the Federal Communications Commission's open Internet regulations yesterday. But that vote has been postponed. House Commerce Committee Republicans have agreed to a request from the panel's top Democrats to hold a hearing on a resolution that would block the Federal Communications Commission's network neutrality rules. That meeting is planned for March 9.
SAINT PAUL ALMANAC | Great-Grandma's fur coat
by Rosemary Ruffenach • As coats made from the pelts of animals go, the one that I inherited three years ago probably wasn't that expensive: It isn't mink, beaver, sable, or even fox. Rather, it's made from the pelts of brown rabbits, dyed black. We figure it came to my Austro-Hungarian great-grandma in the 1930s; family lore has it that Great-Uncle Ted presented it as a gift to his mother. Inside, embroidered in champagne-colored thread on small slips of satin that match the lining, are her initials: M. L., for Mary (Peck) Laber. But there is a bit of mystery associated with the coat-a photo shows Grandma Laber in a dark fur that's a slightly different style from the one I inherited.
