MUSIC | Gaelic Storm at the Fitzgerald Theater: Photos and a retrospective live-tweet by Stacy Schwartz, TC Daily Planet • Someday my phone will actually have enough battery power for me to actually tweet a show. When this happens I'll be able to just cut and paste from Twitter and be done with my review. However, since this was not the case at Gaelic Storm on Thursday night, I hope you'll put up with my "what should have been."

Food too old to sell, but not wasted by Ben Corey, TC Daily Planet • Many may wonder what happens to food in a grocery store after it has gone past the "sell by" date on the package.  Thanks to a local organization, these foods are getting to those in need.

NEW IN BLOGS

THE KNOTHOLE VIEW | Baseball: Not an obsession, but a love by Jean Gabler • Maybe in broad terms I could be described as obsessed by baseball. However, I prefer to think of my relationship with baseball as a loving passion. As I was thinking about this, I came to the realization that I can compare my feelings about the Twins to my feelings for my family. I love my family. I enjoy spending time with them, I care about their welfare, I am interested in everything that they are doing, I want them to succeed, and I don't want them to feel disappointment or loss.

FRONT ROW SEAT | Remembering Rev. Peter J. Gomes of Harvard University by Jay Gabler • As we prepared to leave Lowell House one night, I'd complimented Rev. Gomes on his velvet smoking jacket, and he'd replied, "Well, it's kind of you to say so! I feel rather like an overstuffed ottoman."

MINNEAFRICA | The Ballot no longer a symbol of Democracy by Kawuma Daniel Busuulwa • Decades later, we have the ballot in our hands but still feel an empty void. There is a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. Where is the ballot that Dr. King was fighting for? Where is the ballot that was supposed to end bloodshed in the world and resolve conflict in Africa? What happens to the ballot that we cast in that box?

FLYOVER LAND | Musings on museums by Amy Rea • Specifically, writers' houses. I just read an interesting book called A Skeptic's Guide to Writer's Houses by Anne Trubek, in which she visits several such sites across the U.S. and ponders why we're interested in such places and if they're worth preserving. (It's a great read, by the way.) I admit, I can't pass up the opportunity to visit writers' homes when I have the chance. Sometimes they're a disappointment, an odd collection of "things that are like the things the writer might have had" as opposed to real artifacts. The gold standard for me is the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth. When you visit, you don't see just a period-appropriate sofa, you see the sofa the Brontes owned--and the sofa on which Emily died.

OUTSIDE THE WALLS | Public Servants bearing the burden.... by Dick Bernard • Before the 2011 MN Legislature had convened, and the new MN Governor sworn in, the news concerned the burden of a $6 billion deficit in the MN state budget. At the time I did some simple arithmetic, dividing $6 Billion by 5 Million residents of the State of Minnesota. The result was $1,200 deficit per person: large, but by no means insurmountable. The $6B was an artificial mountain constructed to get Minnesotans in an almost desperate budget cutting mood.
