Victory: Costco announces new seafood policy

Dear sanane, Costco has proven they want to be a leader by announcing a new sustainable seafood policy. However, some major supermarket chains still lag behind. Help us keep the momentum going by telling them to get their act together and save the oceans. I have great news. After just eight months of pressure, Greenpeace's campaign to get Costco to establish a more sustainable seafood policy has ended with a victory. This is a huge win for the oceans. Costco is one of the largest seafood retailers in the U.S. and they’ll no longer be selling 12 red list species -- including orange roughy, shark and Atlantic halibut! They’ve also agreed to pursue better aquaculture practices and take a global leadership role in the effort to develop a more sustainable tuna industry. This is also a huge victory for YOU and every activist who participated in the campaign. I’m not writing you today without the over 100,000 messages sent to Costco’s CEO, the tens of thousands of wallet cards activists handed out, all the phone calls, flyers and even the Greenpeace airship. It was truly inspiring. But it doesn’t stop here. This April, we’ll be releasing our fifth Supermarket Scorecard report. And while Costco has proven they want to be a leader, there are a lot of supermarkets that still need some encouragement. Help keep the momentum going by sending a message to a few of the remaining national bottom-dwellers and tell them to get their act together. Just like our victories with Trader Joe’s and Target, this is only the beginning with Costco. We’ll be monitoring them just like the others to make sure they follow through on their policy. There’s still a lot of work to do to save our oceans, but today we’re one step closer. Celebrate by taking action and get ready.
