trips around the Earth, the [1]space shuttle Discovery is preparing for
its final launch. Since its creation, it has flown to orbit more than any
other craft. It has set a number of precedents including first craft to
feature a female shuttle pilot and female shuttle commander (Eileen
Collins), the first African American spacewalker (Bernard Harris) and the
first sitting member of congress to fly in space (Jake Garn). In its
final foray into space, the Discovery will set another precedent when it
flies the first humanoid robot to fly in space, Robonaut2."

Wednesday that they have created the first prototype for [0]a
millimeter-scale computing system that can hold up to a week's worth of
data when implanted in something as small as a human eye. [1]The
computer, called the Phoenix chip, is just over one cubic millimeter in
size and was designed to monitor eye pressure in glaucoma patients. 'This
is the first true millimeter-scale complete computing system,' said
Dennis Sylvester, a professor at the school and one of the researchers on
the project. Within the computer is an ultra low-power microprocessor, a
pressure sensor, memory, a thin-film battery, a solar cell and a wireless
radio with an antenna that can transmit data to an external reader device
held near the eye."

myself how much I would like to be able to even tell my computer to open
programs by telling it vocally. A simple idea that I am fairly surprised
is not common. Am I a minority in this one? Do people just not like the
idea of talking (without cursing) to a computer, let alone have it act or
reply? Would anyone else be interested in building their own mini-Watson,

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes writes "We've all heard of people who claim to
have 'photographic memories.' Now Joshua Foer writes in the NY Times
magazine (reg. may be required) that a 'skilled memory' can be acquired
and proves it by explaining how he [1]trained his brain to became a
world-class memory athlete winning first place in the speed cards
competition last year at the USA Memory Championship by [2]memorizing a
deck of cards in one minute forty seconds. According to Foer, memory
training is a lost art that dates from antiquity. 'Today we have books,
photographs, computers and an entire superstructure of external devices
to help us store our memories outside our brains, but it wasn't so long
ago that culture depended on individual memories,' writes Foer. 'It was
considered a form of character-building, a way of developing the cardinal
virtue of prudence and, by extension, ethics.' Foer says that the secret
to supermemory is a system of training and discipline that works by
[3]creating 'memory palaces' on the fly filled with lavish images,
painting a scene in the mind so unlike any other it cannot be forgotten.
'Photographic memory is a detestable myth. Doesn't exist. In fact, my
memory is quite average,' concludes Ed Cooke who recently invented a code
that allows him to convert every number from 0 to 999,999,999 into a
unique image that he can then deposit in a memory palace. 'What you have
to understand is that even average memories are remarkably powerful if
used properly.'"

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A post at [0]GamePolitics points out that the Federal Trade Commission
will be [1]looking into free-to-play mobile games that rely on internal
microtransactions as a business model. Many such games are marketed for
children, and there have been [2]a spate of cases where kids racked up
huge bills without their parents' knowledge or explicit consent. "The
in-app purchases have also catapulted children's games such as Smurfs'
Village and Tap Zoo, by San Francisco-based Pocket Gems, into the ranks
of the highest-grossing apps on iPods, iPhones and iPads. But the
practice is troubling parents and public interest groups, who say $99 for
a wagon of Smurfberries or $19 for a bucket of snowflakes doesn't have
any business in a children's game. Though a password is needed to make a
purchase, critics say that the safeguards aren't strong enough and that
there are loopholes. 'Parents need to know that the promotion of games
and the delivery mechanism for them are deceptively cheap,' said Jim
Styer, president of Common Sense Media, a public advocacy group for
online content for children. 'But basically people are trying to make
money off these apps, which is a huge problem, and only going to get
bigger because mobile apps are the new platform for kids.'"

[0]jfruhlinger writes "Slashdot [1]previously covered the National
Broadband Map, designed by the US Federal government to illustrate where
the 'digital divide' between those with access to high-speed Internet and
those who go without. But, as blogger Ryan Faas points out, you can use
it for a much more individualistic purpose: [2]to find your fastest local
wired or wireless ISP. Just [3]plug in your name and address and you'll
soon see what your options are."

[0]Bala4361 writes "Classifieds site Craigslist has been [1]linked with
330 crimes, 12 murders and 105 robberies or assaults in the United States
last year due to anonymous interactions on the site, says a new study.
The report calls Craigslist 'a cesspool of crime,' citing murders, rapes,
robberies, assault and rental rip-offs as some of the examples." Among
the many Reefer Madness-style quotable stretchers from the originating
consultancy: "The unfortunate fact is that Craigslist has become almost
synonymous with crime."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes writes "BetaNews reports that Google has announced
the [1]global availability of Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office,
which went into beta late last year with technology that builds off
Google's acquisition of DocVerse. Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft
Office is essentially a plugin for Windows versions of the productivity
suite (2003, 2007, 2010). 'The plugin syncs your work through Google's
cloud, so everyone can contribute to the same version of a file at the
same time,' says Google Apps product manager Shan Sinha. Additionally,
Google announced a 90-day trial for Appsperience, described as 'a way for
[2]companies that currently use cumbersome legacy systems to see how
web-powered tools help their teams work together more effectively.'"

| Drupal Competes As a Framework, Unofficially

[0]tgeller writes "Drupal developer Ben Buckman attended the [1]BostonPHP
Framework Bake-Off with the hopes of pitting the CMS against [2]CakePHP,
[3]Symfony, [4]Zend, and [5]CodeIgniter. He was told that he couldn't
because [6]Drupal is 'not a framework,' a response he felt was
'coder-purist snobbery ("it's not a framework if you build any of it in a
UI").' So he decided to unofficially compete in the back of the room by
accepting the challenge of building a job-posting app in 30 minutes,
while the official competitors did the same from the stage. He
[7]recorded the results, which are impressive. In the process he raised
the question: What is a framework, anyway?"
