alphadogg writes "With demand for Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) more
sluggish than vendors had hoped, 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch and adapter
makers are [0]making it available for free. FCoE is a standard driven
largely by Cisco to converge customers' data center LAN and storage
fabrics with 10G Ethernet. Industry heavyweights Intel and Brocade are
among those now giving away FCoE capabilities. There are several factors
prompting vendors to slash FCoE prices or stop charging for it
altogether, including market indifference; technological immaturity;
competing alternatives, such as virtualized Fibre Channel and Ethernet
I/O; the recession; and vendors looking to drive switch volumes. 'When
FCoE first came out there used to be a fairly large price premium,' says
Alan Weckel, director of Dell'Oro Group. 'Cisco had to give it away for
free to drive switch volumes. Users were not adopting as rapidly as
thought or that Cisco had hoped for.'"

Hugh Pickens writes writes "The Guardian reports that Apple has launched
a new subscription service for magazines, newspapers and music bought
through its App Store, expanding the model developed for Rupert Murdoch's
iPad newspaper and will [0]keep 30% of the revenue from subscriptions if
the subscription is purchased through Apple. 'Our philosophy is simple
when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30% share;
when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the
publisher keeps 100% and Apple earns nothing,' says Steve Jobs, Apple's
chief executive, who is presently taking a medical leave of absence from
the company. 'All we require is that, if a publisher is making a
subscription offer outside of the app, the same or better offer be
made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one
click right in the app.' Apple's control over its App Store payments plan
has long been a cause for concern for content companies. Publishers want
to have access to subscriber data which can provide lucrative
demographics on which to base advertising campaigns and targeted reader
offers. Apple says customers purchasing a subscription through its App
Store will be [1]given the option of providing the publisher with their
names, email addresses and zip codes. The use of such information will be

eldavojohn writes "In Barcelona, Google's Eric Schmidt has been revealing
future plans for Google, saying that the next release will [0]merge
smartphone and tablet versions of its mobile operating system Android.
Aside from [1]bragging about Android's growth, Schmidt [2]tiptoed around
a question of Google acquiring Twitter, instead offering the very
nebulous statement that YouTube doubled its revenues last year."

NumberField writes "The [0]RSA Conference is underway in San Francisco. A
theme among the opening speakers is that the attackers are winning, and
even well-funded organizations like NASDAQ can't [1]secure their networks
reliably. The show floor is lively, but dominated by the typical
firewalls and 'compliance solutions.' One interesting exception is a
scary [2]side-channel analysis demo in the [3]Cryptography Research booth
using [4]GNU Radio to capture secret keys from various smartphones from
about 10 feet away. (The method is related to [5]early computer music
using AM radio interference.)"

RedEaredSlider writes "NASA's Stardust probe made its [0]closest approach
to comet Tempel-1 on Monday night, marking the first time a comet has
ever been revisited by a spacecraft. The mission, formally called
Stardust-NeXT, for New EXploration of Tempel-1, was launched on its way
in 2006. On Monday night it came within 181 kilometers (112 miles) of the
comet, taking pictures and measuring the amount and composition of dust
in the comet's coma, the plume of gas that surrounds it. It approached
the comet at about 10.6 kilometers (6.7 miles) per second, making it one
of the fastest probes that has yet flown. Stardust made its closest
approach at 11:39 p.m. Eastern and after that, swung around its high-gain
antenna towards Earth to transmit its data. The comet and spacecraft are
about 336 million kilometers (209 million miles) away, so signals take a
full 18 minutes to get to Earth."

dcblogs writes "The White House 2012 budget [0]seeks a 35% increase to
$548 million in cybersecurity research and development, including funds
to help DARPA mitigate the risk of insider threats. Think WikiLeaks.
Improving control system security, post Stuxnet, was also cited as
priority. Overall, the budget seeks $66.1 billion for basic and applied
research across all areas, an 11.6% increase. Some areas called out for
special focus by the White House include robotics. The feds have already
started offering grants for [1]developing of 'co-robots,' which are
'systems that can safely co-exist in close proximity to or in physical
contact with humans in the pursuit of mundane, dangerous, precise or
expensive tasks.' The US also wants to focus research on
[1]nanomanufacturing, 'and the merging of self-assembly with lithography
to achieve large-scale predictable placement of nanoscale components.'"

itwbennett writes "Microsoft Corporate Vice President for Trustworthy
Computing Scott Charney used to think it was the responsibility of ISPs
to keep hacked PCs off the Internet. Now, he says [0]the burden should be
on consumers. Speaking at the RSA Conference, Charney suggested that the
solution may be for consumers to share trusted certificates about the
health of their personal computer: 'The user remains in control. The user
can say I don't want to pass a health certificate,' he said. 'There may
be consequences for that decision, but you can do it.'"
