Australia, are back online in three of the state's regions after a
[0]major virus forced staff to shut them down for more than 24 hours. The
virus crept into the Ambulance Service of NSW's dispatch system,
prompting staff to co-ordinate paramedics by telephone and handwritten
notes. The cause and source of the virus are not yet known."

all the homebrewing done on the WebOS platform, including apps, patches

Trailrunner7 writes "When Barracuda Networks started its bug bounty
program about three months ago, company officials weren't exactly sure
what to expect. They didn't know whether there'd be an onslaught of
submissions or the sound of crickets chirping. The [0]reality turned out
to be somewhere in the middle. Overall, the company has been getting
about 10 bug reports a month, none of which has been very serious. But
that doesn't mean the program hasn't been a success. Peck said that
Barracuda also had run into the same problem that Google and others have:
hackers don't pay much attention to directions. The company set out
specific parameters for what kind of vulnerabilities in which products
were in scope for the rewards, but some researchers still submitted flaws
that were out of bounds, including bugs in partners' products or in the
Barracuda corporate Web site."

under fire for the continued practice of shipping machines with excessive
bloatware. Software preinstalled on some recent HP laptops was worse than
normal though, consuming anywhere from 25-99% CPU by making incessant WMI
queries, resulting in overheating laptops and reduced battery life. Users
on a computer Q&A site [1]did some sleuthing, and revealed that HP
Wireless Assistant software which does nothing but tell the user when

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

phmadore writes "Publishing Perspectives is talking today about [0]the
rise of e-book lending, which, one would hope, will lead to a rise in
questioning exactly how far one's digital rights extend. Although the
articles are mostly talking about the authorized lending programs through
Kindle and Nook ('The mechanics are simple: ebook owners sign up and list
books that they want to allow others to borrow. When someone borrows one
of the ebooks you have listed, you earn a credit. Credits can also be
purchased for as little as $1.99 from eBook Fling'), we have to [1]ask
ourselves why we are suddenly paying publishers more for less. In the
case of iBooks, you can't even transfer your books to another device, let
alone another user, but then at least the prices are somewhat controlled.
In the case of sites like [2]BooksOnBoard, you've got ridiculously
out-of-control prices with a greatly decreased cost of delivery. It's not
all bad, don't get me wrong; [3]Kobo offers competitive prices that never
leave me feeling ripped off or stuck with an inferior product. Still, I
can't help but think: digital rights management, sure! Where are my
rights, as a consumer, and who is managing them? I wouldn't mind selling
the rights back to the publisher or store for in-store credit; I also
wouldn't be terribly bothered if they got a reasonable cut off the resale
of the product to someone else. What I won't like is if they never allow
it or continue to make it impossible for me to sell what's rightfully
mine."

eldavojohn writes "It's a lengthy read, but Lawrence Wright at The New
Yorker has [0]released a 26 page expose on Scientology. In a world where
such innocuous sounding words as 'squirrels,' 'security-checked,'
'disconnection,' 'contra-survival,' 'suppressive persons,' 'clear' and
'open season' carry very serious and heavy baggage, director Paul Haggis
has exited after thirty four years of membership and massive funding. Now
he speaks at length of Scientology's controversies. From how celebrities
were recruited with a 10% commission by a worker at Beverly Hills
Playhouse to the current investigation by the FBI of physical abuse and
[1]human trafficking, Wright draws surrounding histories and accounts of
the Church including [2]Anonymous' crusade. The length of this article
reflects the unusually large number of individuals (12 cases of physical
abuse) cited as testimony of [3]Scientology Leader David Miscavige's
inurement and physical violence. The case remains open as the FBI
collects data and testimony especially in relation to [4]Sea Org. Most
disturbing are the disappearances of people that the New Yorker piece
enumerates. The piece concludes with the author's interaction with the
Church that results in several conflicting foundational statements from
its stance on homosexuality (Haggis' [5]original reason for publicly
leaving it) to almost all details of L. Ron Hubbard's naval service and
discharge. The article ends with Haggis' quote: 'I was in a cult for
thirty-four years. Everyone else could see it. I don't know why I
couldn't.' You can find [6]summaries of the lengthy article and [7]its
suspected results along with corresponding [8]reports listing politicians
involved with the Church. Copyrighted work, leaked government documents,
PS3 encryption keys and everything else has been posted on Slashdot but
only the Church of Scientology has [9]forced comments out of existence."

CWmike writes "Intel put on a brave face Monday at the Mobile World
Congress in Barcelona, [0]insisting that there is continued strong
support from it and many companies for MeeGo, the open source software
platform that Nokia last week said it would [1]abandon in favor of
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. 'Intel is disappointed at Nokia but life
goes on,' said Intel's Renee James. 'Our decision and resolve on MeeGo is
only stronger.' She pointed to a long list of companies participating in
MeeGo development, including competitors AMD, TI and ST Ericsson;
operators including Orange, Telefonica and Sprint; and software companies
including Novell and Wind River. Intel expects to see MeeGo tablets
shipping this year based on its Atom chip. Handsets will follow, James
said. Despite its enthusiasm, however, Intel is [2]sure to be negatively
impacted by Nokia's decision."

SuperSlacker64 writes "In an age where just about everything starts going
digital, it's refreshing to see someone going back to our roots: paper.
Well, sort of. Researchers at Harvard have created [0]a cheap,
dime-sized, paper-based accelerometer that they believe could be used in
various ways, such as inexpensive medical testing. The device works
because a carbon bridge stretches and changes resistivity as the device
is accelerated." When they say "cheap," they mean it; the cost per device
is estimated to be about four cents.

jfruhlinger writes "Android's popularity is growing, but its lack of
enterprise security features is making IT departments pull their hair
out. Two of the biggest Android vendors, Motorola and Samsung, aren't
waiting for Google, but are [0]building their own security functionality
into the devices they sell. Motorola's version will be facilitated by
[1]their purchase of 3LM, an Android-centric mobile security provider
that bases their strategy on Asimov's Three Laws or Robotics, though the
order is tweaked: The device must protect the user, protect itself, and
obey the user, in that order."
