webOS-based smartphones and a webOS tablet today. But in a bit of a

Whether this is happening in specialized products only or HP plans a
wholesale repudiation of Windows, it's definitely a bold move."

Thanks to a new art/science exhibition called "Blood Wars," you can find
out [0]whose dad has the toughest immune system once and for all. The
brainchild of artist Kathy High, "Blood Wars" pits white blood cells from
two different people against each other. From the article: "In order to
create the blood duel, High gets a phlebotomist to take blood samples
from two different people. She then separates the white blood cells from
the rest of the blood and stains them using different colors. They are
then placed in a Petri dish and their interactions are filmed under a
microscope using time-lapse microscopy. The cellular 'winner' of each
round will go onto fight another participant."

direction and acceleration of a phones movement, can be harnessed to
identify when a phone resting on a dashboard or in a cupholder in a

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., have come up with
an idea to improve on an old standby of space exploration instruments and
[0]improve the odds of finding life, if any, on Mars. By adding a laser
and an ion funnel to a mass spectrometer, it is possible to analyze the
elements from the Martian surface directly, without the complex handling
samples usually needed... The new version uses a two-step technique.
First it shoots a laser at the sample's surface. This creates a plume of
molecules and ions. To get the ions into the mass spectrometer, the new
system uses an ion funnel. The ion funnel uses conductive, progressively
smaller electrodes in the shape of a ring that attract the ions,
effectively vacuuming them into the mass spectrometer.'"

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fox News took another shot at the video game violence debate earlier this
week when they asked whether Bulletstorm, an upcoming M-rated shooter
from Epic Games, is [0]the worst game in the world. The article links
violent games with an increase in rapes, and suggests there should be
greater penalties for selling to minors. Gaming website Rock, Paper,
Shotgun [1]breaks down the problems with the article's sensationalist
claims and [2]highlights the disingenuous cherry-picking of quotes.
"Scott Steinberg, CEO of TechSavvy Global, and all-round industry guru,
got in touch with me to show me the answers he submitted to Fox when they
approached him for comment. [3]The full answers are reproduced below,
because what results is a fantastic interview on the subject of adult
game content and regulation. Fox chose to use none of Steinbergs
comments in their final piece, opting instead for the more sensational
claims of those with no expertise in the subject (neither of whom have
found time to reply to our emails). But seeing these answers also
provides further insight into how the mainstream media coverage of gaming
stories works. Far from being a reporter ignorant of the subject and
twisted by naive contributors, Fox correspondent John Brandon was
equipped with a wealth of factual information and informed opinion before
composing his frantic article."

wiredmikey writes "Along with budget constraints and disconnect between
IT and executive management surrounding information security, results of
a recent survey show that a major problem is outright lack of
understanding of threats. We all know the best way to get that budget
increased, is to get hacked. Unfortunately, that could also result in you
losing your job. Some companies, however, are taking creative approaches
to both raise awareness and identify potential vulnerabilities. A manager
with a large financial services group, for example, says that his company
addresses security vulnerabilities by staging a series of what it calls
'war games,' in which [0]a user or group of users is tasked with trying
to compromise a system, while another user or group of users is tasked
with preventing the break-in. Management needs to understand the security
threat and its impact to business, and these 'war games' are an
innovative and creative way for IT departments to convince executive
management on security needs."

right click menu at the top of the browser. At the same time, IE9 RC is

Mr.Intel writes with this excerpt from a UPI report which may interest
those of you with cars, electricity, items made of plastic, etc:
"Estimates of oil reserves in Saudi Arabia are overstated, meaning crude
output could peak within the next decade, [0]leaked US diplomatic cables
reveal. Washington fears Saudi Arabia overestimated its oil reserves by
as much as 40 percent and the kingdom can't keep enough oil flowing to
control prices, US diplomatic cables obtained by WikiLeaks and published
by The Guardian newspaper in London reveal."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trailrunner7 writes "Google has introduced [0]a new two-step
authentication feature for Gmail users that it says will significantly
increase the security of the free mail service. The system enables users
to set up a method for obtaining a secret code that will be required,
along with a password, to access a Gmail account. The new two-factor
authentication system is a voluntary program right now, although it could
become mandatory at some point in the future. Gmail, like virtually all
other webmail services, has been a frequent target of attacks, both
sophisticated and mundane, aimed at hijacking users' accounts. The most
famous of these was an attack that was part of the Aurora operation
against Google and others, part of which targeted the Gmail accounts of
Chinese dissidents."
