What we're hearing
Need to know:

The U.S. has condemned Libya's use of lethal force against peaceful demonstrators, with unconfirmed media reports putting the death toll in the country at 300. Muammar Gaddafi's son said his father would fight "until the last man standing, even to the last woman standing."

Want to know:

A victory for the whales? Two days after it suspended whaling activities, Japan's government ordered the fleet to return home with its lowest ever catch. There is speculation that this could be the last year Japan ventures south to conduct the "lethal research" it says is necessary to study whale populations.

Dull but important:

Increased U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan are killing few high-value militants. The attacks killed at least 581 militants last year, according to independent estimates. The number of those militants noteworthy enough to appear on a U.S. list of most-wanted terrorists: two.

Just because:

Alaskan black bears hibernate for up to seven months a year, during which time they do not eat or drink, before waking up in virtually the same physical state they fell asleep in. Now experts hope to develop methods of putting humans into a similar state, which could help astronauts survive long missions.

Wacky:

A shoot-'em-up video game set in the border town of Ciudad Juarez has angered local officials who are busy fighting all-too-real violence. Legislators said they have asked federal authorities to ban "Call of Juarez: The Cartel," which is based on drug cartel shootouts in Ciudad Juarez. Check out a list of the world's banned video games.

And fun graphic for the day: comparing the GDP of China's provinces to countries
