SpuriousLogic writes "A new study suggests that a child's future success
depends on [0]the amount of self-control they exhibit. From the article:
'The international team of researchers looked at 1,037 children in New
Zealand born in the early 1970s, observing their levels of self-control
at ages 3 and 5. At ages 5, 7, 9 and 11, the team used parent, teacher
and the children's own feedback to measure such factors as impulsive
aggression, hyperactivity, lack of persistence and inattention. At age
32, they used physical exams, blood tests, records searches and personal
interviews of 96% of the original participants to determine how healthy,
wealthy and law-abiding the subjects had turned out to be. The results
were startling. In the fifth of children with the least self-control, 27%
had multiple health problems. Compare that with the fifth of kids with
the most self-control at just 11%. Among the bottom fifth, 32% had an
annual income below approximately $15,000, while only 10% of the top
fifth fell into that low-income bracket. Just 26% of the top-fifth's
offspring were raised in single-parent homes, compared with 58% of those
in the bottom fifth. And 43% of the bottom fifth had been convicted of a
crime, far outstripping the top fifth's 13% rate.'"

short-range WiFi system on a secure channel allocated by the FCC. The

where this could benefit safety or traffic? Predicting collision courses
with unseen vehicles, seeing sudden stops before they're visible, and
spotting traffic pattern changes on a busy highway. The National Highway

looked at how they were spending their free time with things they
considered coping mechanismsusing Facebook, listening to music, reading,

The Opposable Thumbs blog has a detailed retrospective on almost [0]three
decades of history in the graphic adventure genre. While this type of
game has fallen from favor in recent times, many classic titles made
indelible marks on the memories and preferences of an entire generation
of gamers. If you played video games in the '80s and '90s, you'll
probably see something you recognize. Quoting: "In its
sometimes-turbulent thirty-year history, the graphic-adventure genre has
driven technology adoption, ridden at both the crest and trough of the
graphics and audio waves, touched the lives of millions of people, and
shaped the rise (and, in some cases, fall) of several big-name people and
companies in the gaming industry. It's a genre that has often been held
back by its own insularity, suffering from an unwillingness to adapt to
changing market conditions or to further push the boundaries of
interactivity. Adventure games certainly did these things, but the
efforts to truly innovate seemed to peak in the mid-'90s, before rapidly
falling offwith only a few exceptions. The improving fortunes of
adventure game developers in recent years may at least in part be
attributable to their efforts to innovateTelltale with the episodic
structure, Quantic Dream with a new control system (for better or worse),
and Japanese developers such as Cing with Nintendo DS titles that
introduce elements from visual novels.

surveillance system at the Naco Border Patrol Station say they observed
several people preparing a catapult and launching packages over the
International Border fence last Friday evening. The 3-yard tall catapult
was found about 20 yards from the US border on a flatbed towed by a
sports utility vehicle, according to a Mexican army officer with the 45th
military zone in the border state of Sonora.'"

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An anonymous reader writes "Volkswagen just unveiled a new car at the
Qatar Motor Show that gets an astounding 100km for less than a liter of
diesel fuel that's the equivalent of 313 miles per gallon! The [0]XL1
concept car is an upgraded version of the VW L1 vehicle, and it features
an ultra-efficient diesel engine in addition to an electric motor that is
powered by a lithium-ion battery. The vehicle is currently slated to
enter production in 2013 and is expected to cost approximately $29,500."
Autoblog [1]calls it 261 mpg, which isn't too shabby, either. At less
than a thousand pounds empty, I hope this comes with a really good bike
lock.

Animats writes "SourceForge, a hosting site for many open source
projects, is down today. Management claims they were attacked: 'We
[0]detected a direct targeted attack that resulted in an exploit of
several SourceForge.net servers, and have proactively shut down a handful
of developer centric services to safeguard data and protect the majority
of our services.' Currently, CVS and SVN access to source code, even for
reading, is unavailable, and there is no announced restoration time."
(SourceForge and Slashdot are both part of Geeknet, Inc.) Update: 01/27

some clarification: the site is up, and SVN is available, though CVS
isn't. There's also a [2]follow-up post on the site's blog.

tekgoblin writes "The courts have just [0]issued a temporary restraining
order against George Hotz (Geohot). Sony filed this lawsuit because they
were unhappy that Geohot had released the Playstation 3 decryption keys
so other people could play unsigned games on it. [Geohot is prohibited
from] 'offering to the public, creating, posting online, marketing,
advertising, promoting, installing, distributing, providing, or otherwise
trafficking' in any software or methods for circumventing the PS3's
protection methods. No longer can he 'provide links from any website to
any other website' relating to such matters, or publish any information
obtained by hacking the PS3. And more to the point, he can no longer
'engage in acts of circumvention of TPMS in the PS3 System to access,
obtain, remove, or traffic in copyrighted works.' Pretty much he can't
talk or think about the PS3 for some time."
