adeelarshad82 writes "Verizon's new 4G LTE network is so fast that you
can use up your entire 5GB in as little as 32 minutes. The 2010-era
speeds are soured by the 2005-era thinking on data plans. Verizon has
priced LTE pretty much like 3G to encourage data sipping, not guzzling.
As soon as you start using the latest high-bandwidth Internet services,
your whole month's allotment can evaporate in no time. According to a
test, the network's speed maxed out at 21Mbps, which means that it takes
only [0]32 minutes to smoke up the 5GB monthly data cap on the plan.
While the 21Mbps speed was hit on a low traffic network, Verizon
estimates you'll be able to get around 8.5Mbps with a loaded network
which still means that the cap can be exhausted in about an hour and a
half."

thecarchik writes "Doug Parks, vehicle line executive for the 2011
Chevrolet Volt, GM's range-extended electric vehicle, confirmed Tuesday
that the company [0]loses money on every Volt it sells. The expensive
16-kilowatt-hour battery pack, which likely costs GM somewhere between
$8,000 and $12,000, is clearly too expensive to let the company build
hundreds of thousands of Volts right away. Just [1]10,000 Volts will be
built in 2011, though GM is working to increase that number. GM plans to
chip away incrementally to lower the costs of the specialized components
in the Volt, especially the power electronics. The price of consumer
lithium-ion cells has fallen 6 to 8 percent annually since their 1989
launch; the large-format cells in automotive packs seem likely to follow
the same curve and as costs are lowered the Volt may stop being a loss
for the company."

CWmike writes "'Wintel' is the term that for years defined Windows-based
computers running Intel chips. Now a similar expression is emerging for
smartphones: 'Quadroid,' a term that refers to the Qualcomm chips used
inside smartphones running the Android mobile operating system. The term,
recently coined in a report by the PRTM consultancy, could catch on,
largely because Qualcomm provides 77% of the chips in phones running
Google's Android, which is [0]expected to take the No. 2 slot in 2010.
And the Quadroid alliance is expected to grow. Like Wintel has for PCs,

some analysts say. That might seem like a good thing to consumers, but
may not be so good for many phone makers."

It seems the [0]harsh words from District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez on
Wednesday had their intended effect; prosecutors in Matthew Crippen's
Xbox modding case [1]have now dismissed the indictment. Quoting Wired:
"Witness No. 1, Tony Rosario, was an undercover agent with the
Entertainment Software Association. He told jurors Wednesday that he paid
Crippen $60 in 2008 to modify an Xbox, and secretly videotaped the
operation. Rosario had responded to Crippens advertisement on the
internet and met Crippen at his Anaheim house. All of that had been laid
out in pretrial motions. But during his testimony, Rosario also said
Crippen inserted a pirated video game into the console to verify that the
hack worked. That was a new detail that helped the government meet an
obligation imposed by the judge that very morning, when Gutierrez ruled
that the government had to prove Crippen knew he was breaking the law by
modding Xboxes. But nowhere in Rosarios reports or sworn declarations
was it mentioned that Crippen put a pirated game into the console. ...
[Prosecutor Allen Chiu] conceded he never forwarded that information to
the defense."

EveryDNS, who [1]terminated the DNS provision for wikileaks.org. A few
hours later, WikiLeaks [2]moved to a Swiss domain (wikileaks.ch).
Netcraft suggests this move could be because the wikileaks.org domain was
registered with a US company, which could be influenced by the US
government. The new wikileaks.ch site is hosted in Sweden, but redirects
all of its traffic to France. Strangely, WikiLeaks has chosen to use

security and privacy analyst Christopher Soghoian recently [1]obtained

strawberryshakes writes "Cyberwar is the new nuclear war. Bruce Schneier
says governments should [0]establish hotlines and treaties outlining the
protocol surrounding cyberwar, just as they would for any other war. He
wrote in the Financial Times ([1]paywalled, but [2]available through
Google), 'A first step would be a hotline between the worlds cyber
commands, modelled after similar hotlines among nuclear commands. This
would at least allow governments to talk to each other, rather than guess
where an attack came from. More difficult, but more important, are new
cyberwar treaties. These could stipulate a no first use policy, outlaw
unaimed weapons, or mandate weapons that self-destruct at the end of
hostilities. The Geneva Conventions need to be updated too. Cyber weapons
beg to be used, so limits on stockpiles, and restrictions on tactics, are
a logical end point. International banking, for instance, could be
declared off-limits. Whatever the specifics, such agreements are badly
needed.'"

An anonymous reader writes "This article has a very interesting
description of [0]the algorithms behind the ghosts in Pac-Man. I had no
idea about most of this information, but that's probably because it's
difficult to study the ghosts when I die every 30 seconds. Quoting: 'The
ghosts are always in one of three possible modes: Chase, Scatter, or
Frightened. The "normal" mode with the ghosts pursuing Pac-Man is Chase,
and this is the one that they spend most of their time in. While in Chase
mode, all of the ghosts use Pac-Man's position as a factor in selecting
their target tile, though it is more significant to some ghosts than
others. In Scatter mode, each ghost has a fixed target tile, each of
which is located just outside a different corner of the maze. This causes
the four ghosts to disperse to the corners whenever they are in this
mode. Frightened mode is unique because the ghosts do not have a specific
target tile while in this mode. Instead, they pseudorandomly decide which
turns to make at every intersection.'"

Trailrunner7 writes "A new paper from researchers at Verizon Business
identifies a method through which [0]an attacker can bypass Internet
Explorer Protected Mode and gain elevated privileges once he's
successfully exploited a bug on the system. Protected Mode in Internet
Explorer is one of a handful of key security mechanisms that Microsoft
has added to Windows in the last few years. It is often described as a
sandbox, in that it is designed to prevent exploitation of a
vulnerability in the browser from leading to more persistent compromise
of the underlying system. In their research, the Verizon Business team
found a method that, when combined with an existing memory-corruption
vulnerability in the browser, enables an attacker to [1]bypass Protected
Mode and elevate his privileges on the compromised machine (PDF). The
technique enables the attacker to move from a relatively un-privileged
level to one with higher privileges, giving him complete access to the
logged-in user's account."
