THEATER | Joking Envelope's "Super-Powered Revenge Christmas #1": Superheroes save Christmas with Minneapolis Theatre Garage logic

The downtown Minneapolis Macy's staff seem to have no budget for, and little interest in, changing the subject of their eighth-floor auditorium holiday display—and even if they did, it's proabably highly unlikely that they'd choose to adapt Bill Corbett's new play Super-Powered Revenge Christmas #1. That said, it's both a compliment to and a criticism of the play that Macy's would almost be on safely inoffensive ground producing the story as a family-friendly animatronic display, despite the fact that the plot climaxes with alternate-universe incarnations of Santa Claus and the naked baby Jesus flying through the sky on a blood-red rocket, punching and kicking at brutal hordes of evil drones.MORE »

THEATER | Open Eye Figure Theatre's Holiday Pageant sticks a pincushion under the holiday season by Lea Sorrentino, TC Daily Planet • In search of holiday cheer this past Friday, I joined an audience of people who poured into the small reception area at Open Eye Theatre. We were greeted with warm hot cider and an array of cookies that would have made Santa green with envy. As we filed into our seats the lights dimmed, and we could hear was the sweet sound of an accordion transporting us into a fantasy world filled with puppets, angels, and the dark lord Lucifer.

The movement has grown to three groups, which have involved more than 200 Latina women coming together weekly to learn and to address issues that can help them grow and improve the lives of their families.

MUSIC | Tony Ortiz's Someday: Hear him, feel him by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet • It was an evening at MJ Kroll's School of the Wise II showcase and veteran singer-songwriter Tony Ortiz had just stepped off the stage. You could feel in the air how much admiration the crowd members have for his ability. Kroll, Twin Cities Radio's Jazzy J, and very pleased members of the public were sitting around tables, eyes wide taking Ortiz in as he walked over to shoot the breeze with this and that person. I felt like I was in the presence of royalty.
