An anonymous reader writes "The TSA [0]isn't the most respected of
governmental agencies right now, but at least it comes by the poor
reputation honestly. The lack of standards, inconsistent application of
searches and policies, and occasional rude agent all combine to make
flying an unpleasant experience. It's often derided as 'security
theater,' which describes [1]the experience of Mythbuster Adam Savage
before a recent flight. Savage was put through the full-body scanner, and
while he joked that it made his penis feel small, no one seemed to notice
the items he was carrying on his person. The [2]video tells the rest of
the story."

people,' stated the developers behind the project, in a blog item posted
Tuesday announcing the alpha release of the service. 'By taking these
baby steps, we'll be able to quickly identify performance problems and
iterate on features as quickly as possible.' Such a cautious rollout may
be necessary, given how fresh the code is. In September, when [2]the
first version of the working code behind the service was posted, it was

Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg may not be worried about Diaspora quite

formfeed writes "The register claims that 'Ubuntu is [0]moving away from
its established six-month-cycle and potentially to a future where
software updates land on a daily basis.' While this sounds like a sudden
change, it is apparently more of a long-term thought. The Register quotes
Shuttleworth: '"Today we have a six-month release cycle," Shuttleworth
said. "In an internet-oriented world, we need to be able to release
something every day. That's an area we will put a lot of work into in the
next five years. The small steps we are putting in to the Software Center
today, they will go further and faster than people might have envisioned
in the past."' But given that many of Shuttleworth's thoughts became
decisions later on, it might be interesting to see, where this one leads.
Interestingly enough, five years is about the time when [1]Ubuntu will
run out of letters."

'[Terrorists] are going to continue to probe the system and try to find a

[0]Ponca City, We love you writes "TechDirt reports that a judge has
asked Righthaven to explain [1]why a non-profit organization reposting an
entire article isn't fair use. The case involves the [2]Center for
Intercultural Organizing of Portland, Oregon, which was sued by
Righthaven in August after an entire 33-paragraph Review-Journal story
about Las Vegas immigrants was posted on the center's website, crediting
the Review-Journal. The nonprofit says it was founded by Portland-area
immigrants and refugees to combat widespread anti-Muslim sentiment after
9/11 and it works to strengthen immigrant and refugee communities through
education, civic engagement, organizing and mobilization and [3]does not
charge subscription fees or derive any income from its website. The
interesting thing is that the defendant in this case didn't even raise
the fair use issue. It was the judge who brought it up, suggesting that
the Nevada judges are being inundated with hundreds of Righthaven cases,
[4]and that Righthaven has already lost once in a case that was found to
be fair use so judges may want to set a precedent to clear their
dockets."

itwbennett writes "Thirty-three-year old Scottsman Matthew Anderson was
sentenced this week to 18 months in prison for orchestrating a malicious
Trojan campaign in 2006. The reason for his relatively light sentence? He
apparently [0]wasn't seeking to maximize profit like any normal,
red-blooded hacker. Also, his timing was good. His arrest in June 2006
predated by a matter of months the Police and Justice Act, which would
likely have resulted in a harsher sentence. By comparison, [1]David
Kernell, who snooped in Sarah Palin's email, got a year in prison."

Notice of Allowance, which means [0]it will grant the 'Face' trademark to
the popular social networking site. Facebook now has three months to pay

Brad Block, a supervisor for the Chicago Commission on Animal Care and
Control says a coyote recently spotted downtown is part of [0]a program
designed to monitor the rodent population. "The animal has the run of the
Loop to help deal with rats and mice," He said no one has called today to
complain. Hes not a threat. Hes not going to pick up your children,
Block said. His job is to deal with all of the nuisance problems, like
mice, rats and rabbits.
