chicksdaddy writes "The Windows/Office/IE monoculture is disappearing
faster than equatorial glaciers Mac OS X and iOS, Linux and Android ...
and whole new application ecosystems to go with each. That's bad news for
malware authors and other bad guys, who count on 9.5 out of 10 systems
running Windows and Microsoft applications to do their magic. What's the
solution? Why, [0]hardware specific hacks, of course! After all, the list
of companies making CPUs is far smaller than, say, the list of companies
making iPhone applications. Malware targeting one or more of those
processors would work regardless of what OS or applications were
installed. There's just one problem: its not easy to figure out what kind
of CPU a device is running. But researchers at France's Ecole Superiore
d'Informatique, Electronique, Automatique (ESIEA) are working on that
problem. Threatpost.com reports on a research paper that lays out a
strategy for fingerprinting processors by observing subtle differences in
the way they perform complex floating point calculations. The method
allows them to distinguish broad subsets of processor types by
manufacturer, and researchers plan to refine their methods and release a
tool that can make specific processor fingerprinting a snap."

airport security staff for transporting a container with more than 100ml

she said, 'I'm the Security Minister.' The Baroness is also former head

Home Office spokesman, trained in the use of the passive voice, 'Liquids

Ron Carmel, co-founder of game developer 2D Boy, which created the indie
hit World of Goo, gave a speech at Montreal International Games Summit in
which he encourages large game publishers to [0]put more time and money
into smaller, indie-like teams. Quoting GameSetWatch: "'We need a
medium-sized design studio. Something that is larger than a typical
indie, but has the same propensity for of talent density, focus, and
risk-taking,' said Carmel, formerly an employee of major publisher
Electronic Arts prior to going independent. Notably, a focus on profit
must be eliminated from the equation. 'Creating this within a major
developer doesn't present a problem,' said Carmel. With a budget of $1-$2
million dollars, 10 staffers could be hired to work on 'creatively
ambitious and forward-thinking projects.' He likened it to the automobile
industry, which alongside its mainstream consumer products works on
concept cars few of which enter production as regular models. The
concept car is, said Carmel, 'a marketing expense to build your brand,
and say, "Look at all the amazing things we're creating."' It also helps
with recruitment. Said Carmel, 'there's no reason the larger game
companies can't do that.' He also said that developers must move away
from the notion that a team comprised primarily of programmers and
artists can create a great work. Why do Valve's games have such amazing
environments? Because, said Carmel, 'Valve has architects on staff.'"

greymond writes "In my [0]ever growing job responsibilities, I've
recently been tasked with documenting our organization's IT
infrastructure, primarily focusing on cost analysis of our hardware
leases and software purchases. This is something that has never been done
in our organization before and while it's moving along slowly, I'm
already seeing some places where we could make improvements. Once
completed, I see this as an opportunity to bring up the topic of
migrating the majority of our office from Windows 7 to Linux and from
Exchange to Gmail. However, this would result in three departments each
running a different system: Windows, OS X, and most likely Fedora. Has
anyone worked in or tried to set up an environment like this? What
roadblocks did you run into? Is this really feasible or should I just
continue to focus on the cutbacks that don't require OS changes? (The
requirement for having three different systems is that the vast majority
of our administration, who rely solely on an install of Microsoft
Windows, Word and Excel, are savvy enough that if they came in and saw
Gnome running on Fedora with Open Office they'd pick it up fast. However,
our marketing department is composed entirely of Apple systems, and the
latest Adobe Creative Suite doesn't seem to all work under Wine. The
biggest issue is with the Sales department though, as they rely on a
proprietary sales platform that is Windows only and generally, sales
personal give the biggest push back when it comes to organizational
changes.)"

DeviceGuru writes "A [0]Lego Mindstorms robotics kit controlled by an HTC
Nexus One smartphone successfully [1]untangled a Rubik's Cube puzzle in
12.5 seconds at this weeks [2]ARM technical conference in Silicon Valley.
The current 3x3x3 cube-solvers's 15-second average represents a
substantial improvement over the 25-second solutions of an earlier
version, which was powered by a circa-2006 Nokia N95 smartphone, thanks
to a faster (1GHz) CPU, more RAM, and revamped cube-solving algorithms.
ARM Engineer David Gilday, who created the robotic cube-solver, claims
the current version's algorithms can handle cube complexities up to
100x100x100, assuming he build the mechanics. In terms of racing humans,
Gilday says the Lego robotics kits can only manage around 1.5 moves per
second, whereas human players can make between 5 and 6 moves per second,
amazingly enough." Update: 11/12 03:45 GMT by [3]T : Apologies to creator
David Gilday, whose name was earlier misspelled.

bonch writes "The Interior Department inspector general has released a
report stating that [0]the White House edited a drilling safety report by
reordering paragraphs to make it appear as though a seven-member panel of
independent experts supported the six-month ban on offshore drilling. The
IG report states, 'The White House edit of the original DOI draft
executive summary led to the implication that the moratorium
recommendation had been peer-reviewed by the experts,' but the panel had
only reviewed a draft of safety recommendations and not a drilling ban.
The White House has issued a statement saying that there was 'no
intentional misrepresentation of their views.' This follows [1]complaints
from scientists and environmentalists that the administration has not
been holding to its promise of policy guided by science and not
ideology."
